President Obama has kept us out of Syria, Egypt, Iran, the Ukraine, has ended the Iraq War, captured and killed Bin Laden, is ending the Afghanistan War, is reducing nuclear armaments and stockpiles, has effected European solidarity with the U.S., and still the screaming media calls him a dictator, a hypocrite, weak, ineffectual, etc.
Do we really want peace? Do we really recognize the courage and strength of character that peace demands?

Barb, when Common Dreams calls President Obama a hypocrite, when Fire Dog Lake and other so-called Progressive sites demean the President because he doesn't enact their ideology, it's not just the right Wing. In fact, I see no difference between the extremes.
There are sites that are Progressive, reasonable, that advocates for the common good, such as Daily KOS. But, ever since Obama was elected, I am aware of the extreme hostility to this President. Just my take, Barb.
The art of politics is complicated, will always have to deal with new events that destabilize. I think Obama's emphasis on diplomacy is despised by the Right wing, and the intractability of cooperation and peace frustrates and infuriates the extreme left.
Jimmy Carter kept us out of war, and yet, he is generally looked at as a weak President. That's what I was thinking of this morning when I expounded. But, as always, I appreciate the dialogue, mostly, ; )

A friend from elsewhere has commented that most people are simply driven by the need to see themselves as nice/good. Applied here, they see this man that they vociferously dislike, but after all, racism is an awful word, so it can't apply to them. *Therefore* it MUST be something actually wrong with what he's doing. . . . Orly Taitz insists that she in NOT a racist, for instance. . . .
And yes that's true about Carter. My mum actually wrote him a letter telling him she thought he'd been a good president. He answered her, saying that he'd tried. Alas, the family never found the note after her death. I'd have loved to have had it.

Tonight we attended *A Midsummer Night's Dream* performed by 27 home schoolers from across Vermont, and it was excellent! Hilarious! Bottom and Puck were especially gifted.
We love Shakespeare and so little of it is performed locally, so we’re extra glad we went.
I agree completely that Jimmy Carter was a good soul to have as our President. I admired him then and still do. It seems to me that his time in office went the same way as Howard Dean's candidacy, actually, as those who wanted power slowly took him down. He did not know how best to work with Congress just as Howard didn't know how best to address the national press. Congress took the same "won't help" attitude that we see today, though perhaps less practiced-up then. Not helping and keeping silence while a good person gets whittled down is not acceptable. I see the same thing happening to Barack Obama, but so far he has had better luck. Carter saw helicopters crash in the desert; Obama saw Osama bin Laden get caught.

A serendipity: last night on Bill Maher, Prssident Jimmy Carter was the first guest. Carter has written his 27th book, and this one deals with inequalities for the poor, women, children, the other. Yes, a good man. Maybe it will be a real sign of spiritual evolution when we can value the good that leaders do over the power and influence.

Pat, I think the ratio of hp to water for a gargle is quite personal. Brenda has a friend who uses the peroxide straight --) with no water. I usually start with two or three ounces of warm water and put a few drops in, try it and see how it works/tastes and usually add more. There are a couple of commercial mixtures available with things like cranberry added. I have not tried them. Hope this helps.
HP can play havoc with the mucus membranes lining the mouth. I've seen it recommended that not more that a 50-50 ratio be used as a gargle. It is quite an excellent gargle.
I have some links to articles on the slide here in WA state, but I've lost my directions on how to make them clickable. It didn't have to happen, there are reports and warnings going back decades. unfortunately, a lot of WA economy comes from fishing and logging. Both activities that are not in sync with ecology.
Our schools are funded with proceeds from logging and the loggers and geologist are continually arguing about the amount that should be clear cut (!!!!) and the logging companies don't always stick to the boundries they are supposed to.

I have a friend who worked in American Samoa at the same time we were there. She lives in the area of Oso, responded on Facebook, and I'm relieved to know she is okay.
With all the homes lost in our flooding and now in Northwest Seattle, it seems to me the county, town, state needs to be proactive in zoning. Even now as we drive Big Thompson Canyon, there are homes right at the edge of the river.
The problems are just the river and rain, those hills and mountains are unstable and enough saturation and down they come. It's grievous the loss of life and livelihoods, not to mention homes.
Use food grade HP. When mixed in correct proportion with water, it can be drunk daily to deliver oxygen to the cells and vastly improve health and energy. Food grade HP has an extra oxygen molecule. It must be food grade labeled; found at health food stores. I use the 3% and mix that with water as per internet directions.

I recommend hanging out in the bath area with the shower steaming up the room, sleep with a cool mist humidifier, and Nurse Teri always says "blow gently!" Have you gone to the pharmacy for Advil Cold & Sinus? You have to ask for it at the pharmacy counter because people use it to make meth; so they keep a database of who bought it where. It used to be over-the-counter. The stuff works wonders!
Must sleep: Grand on the premises…though Bill is getting up with her in the morning so I can sleep in for once! Off I go…
More for Pat....my primary care doc suggested a saline solution spray or drops four times a day to keep the nasal tissues healthy. Since I have been doing that year round my seasonal allergies are less severe and not quite so apt to turn into a true sinus infection. Take care and happy Sunday all!
I have been through 14 days of Amoxicillin, have used saline drops, used a Netti Cup, sucked on cough drops, used antisceptic throat spray, brewed Breathe Easy tea, and I'll keep at it. It's been a stubborn condition, though seems to be improving. The hardest part is that my bronchial tubes thicken, and I gasp for breath. I also take short walks with Molly and breathe deeply, oh, and as the water in the electric teapot heats to a boil, I breathe in the steam. Showers and baths help. It began last year, and I think the cause was all the particulates in the air from the wildfires. I've read that they take a long time to dissipate; for instance, we are still breathing the air that Ghengis Khan breathed-read that somewhere.
Anyway, thank you. I'll reread what you have posted and try what I haven't tried yet.
Meanwhile, watched the restoration films of The Godfather Parts 2 and 3, each three hours long. Just magnificent, Shakespearean. The tragedy of clans and tribes and murder. Pat, I wonder too if you have had two different germs taking turns. That happened to me once with a breast infection, back in my nursing days. Finally the doc cultured my breastmilk and discovered a second culprit. So I needed a second antibiotic more specific to that one and Voila! Maybe your doc could culture some of your congestion and see what's going on.

I was so loved by the story of the woman whose house was destroyed, but she just barely survived, then took care of a 4 year old boy whose whole family died. excepting only his mother who was at work and couldn't get past the mud to get home). Earthlings panicked, came together, found a way to cooperate. Then the scientists removed the hologram.

Got an email from Shirlee during my nap. This is it, in part: not good news. Surgery will be scheduled before Easter. More tests and OK requested from primary care doc. A friend of mine just had cataract surgery, and there will have to be another to further correct, but she is glad the correction is possible.
We take our bodies so for granted, or I do, expect it to be always able and fit, and darn, it just isn't the case. I guess it teaches patience, empathy, resilience, but do I really want to learn all that stuff?? Guess I have no choice, but glad there are remedies.

The U.N. Human Rights Committee in Geneva on Thursday condemned the United States for criminalizing homelessness, calling it "cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment" that violates international human rights treaty obligations. It also called upon the U.S. government to take corrective action, following a two-day review of U.S. government compliance with a human rights treaty ratified in 1992.
"I'm just simply baffled by the idea that people can be without shelter in a country, and then be treated as criminals for being without shelter," said Sir Nigel Rodley, chairman of the committee in closing statements on the U.S. review. "The idea of criminalizing people who don't have shelter is something that I think many of my colleagues might find as difficult as I do to even begin to comprehend."
The Committee called on the U.S. to abolish criminalization of homelessness laws and policies at state and local levels, intensify efforts to find solutions for homeless people in accordance with human rights standards and offer incentives for decriminalization, including giving local authorities funding for implementing alternatives and withholding funding for criminalizing the homeless.
Those recommendations run counter to the current trends in the nation.
From Shirlee: update on today's high jinks. There will be no surgery tomorrow because another small spot was found on my left tonsil. I have had for several years a bend at the top of my spine that makes it difficult to administer anesthetic safely. My tongue doc wants me to see a more specialized group in W-S. If they call with an appointment will keep it. But I won't be committing to more extensive testing or surgery for now. Picked daughter Dana's brain for questions to ask about alternative care.

We got a most pleasant surprise today! We are invited to our daughter-in-law's graduation (as a Registered Nurse) on May 17th! Naturally we assumed that her parents, husband and daughters would fill her ticket allowance, but apparently they hold the graduation in a huge civic center! Yay!!!
I love living in Vermont where you can trust your state Reps to actually represent you. A bill in Congress, which I have been cheering on for years, has a real hope of passing soon; and it has once again been supported by the Vermont State Legislature, in the form of a Resolution which easily passed both House and Senate. In fact, it passed on March 18th, long before I thought it would!
H.R. 485, The National Nurse Act of 2013, would make the role of the Chief Nurse Officer more visible to the average American, highlight the vital role of nurses, and put the emphasis in healthcare on Prevention. Go Nurses!

I'm reading Al Gore's The Future. The research and evidence compiled and explained brings coherence to the massive changes we are witnessing in technology, climate, the work place, communication, energy, literacy, cultures, and transportation. We were talking this morning. I remember being startled in the 80s when my mother was in her 70s and didn't get the gist of a cartoon in the newspaper. I can't imagine what she would think of the technology today.
Anyway, I think Gore's book i s brilliant, a must read to try to understand the evolutionary changes going on. He says that for the first time in human history, we are in charge of evolution and makes a persuasive case.

A serendipity: last night on Bill Maher, Prssident Jimmy Carter was the first guest. Bill remarked that not a shot had been fired during his tenure as President and praised him for all the good he has done internationally. Carter has written his 27th book, and this one deals with inequalities for the poor, women, children, the other. Yes, a good man. Maybe it will be a real sign of spiritual evolution when we can value the good that leaders do over the power and influence.
Shirlee, what was the proportion of hydrogen peroxide to water used as a gargle? I tried it last night and it helped. I'm still dealing with this darn sinus condition. Will it ever go away?!
The BBC had an interesting segment on envy and jealousy this morning, citing Genesis and Shakespeare's Othello with comments from psychologists. We have had our human characteristics forever. How to deal with them?!

Pat, I think the ratio of hp to water for a gargle is quite
personal. Brenda has a friend who uses the peroxide straight --) with no water. I usually start with two or three
ounces of warm water and put a few drops in, try it and
see how it works/tastes and usually add more. There are
a couple of commercial mixtures available with things like
cranberry added. I have not tried them. Hope this helps.
HP can play havoc with the mucus membranes lining the mouth. I've seen it recommended that not more that a 50-50 ratio be used as a gargle. It is quite an excellent gargle.
I have some links to articles on the slide here in WA state, but I've lost my directions on how to make them clickable. It didn't have to happen, there are reports and warnings going back decades. unfortunately, a lot of WA economy comes from fishing and logging. Both activities that are not in sync with ecology.
Our schools are funded with proceeds from logging and the loggers and geologist are continually arguing about the amount that should be clear cut (!!!!) and the logging companies don't always stick to the boundries they are supposed to.

I have a friend who worked in American Samoa at the same time we were there. She lives in the area of Oso, responded on Facebook, and I'm relieved to know she is okay.
With all the homes lost in our flooding and now in Northwest Seattle, it seems to me the county, town, state needs to be proactive in zoning. Even now as we drive Big Thompson Canyon, there are homes right at the edge of the river.
The problems are just the river and rain, those hills and mountains are unstable and enough saturation and down they come. It's grievous the loss of life and livelihoods, not to mention homes.

Use food grade HP. When mixed in correct proportion with water, it can be drunk daily to deliver oxygen to the cells and vastly improve health and energy. Food grade HP has an extra oxygen molecule. It must be food grade labeled; found at health food stores. I use the 3% and mix that with water as per internet directions.

Pat, if a sinus infection keeps on keeping on, it's usually bacterial and you may need an antibiotic.
I recommend hanging out in the bath area with the shower steaming up the room, sleep with a cool mist humidifier, and Nurse Teri always says "blow gently!" Have you gone to the pharmacy for Advil Cold & Sinus? You have to ask for it at the pharmacy counter because people use it to make meth; so they keep a database of who bought it where. It used to be over-the-counter. The stuff works wonders!
Must sleep: Grand on the premises…though Bill is getting up with her in the morning so I can sleep in for once! Off I go…

solution spray or drops four times a day to keep the nasal tissues healthy. Since I have been doing that year round
my seasonal allergies are less severe and not quite so apt

I have been through 14 days of Amoxicillin, have used saline drops, used a Netti Cup, sucked on cough drops, used antisceptic throat spray, brewed Breathe Easy tea, and I'll keep at it. It's been a stubborn condition, though seems to be improving. The hardest part is that my bronchial tubes thicken, and I gasp for breath. I also take short walks with Molly and breathe deeply, oh, and as the water in the electric teapot heats to a boil, I breathe in the steam. Showers and baths help. It began last year, and I think the cause was all the particulates in the air from the wildfires. I've read that they take a long time to dissipate; for instance, we are still breathing the air that Ghengis Khan breathed-read that somewhere.
Anyway, thank you. I'll reread what you have posted and try what I haven't tried yet.
Meanwhile, watched the restoration films of The Godfather Parts 2 and 3, each three hours long. Just magnificent, Shakespearean. The tragedy of clans and tribes and murder. It was Genesis, Othello, MacBeth, and the filming, Francis Ford Coppola was a genius. But, stayed up til 2 AM, am destroyed today.
I'll check out the Advil. I'm determined to get over this, which has gone on for about five months. I have sympathy for people who have COPD and asthma. I don't think that's what this is, but it feels as uncomfortable as I imagine those conditions are.

Pat, I wonder too if you have had two different germs taking turns. That happened to me once with a breast infection, back in my nursing days. Finally the doc cultured my breastmilk and discovered a second culprit. So I needed a second antibiotic more specific to that one and Voila! Maybe your doc could culture some of your congestion and see what's going on.
Bill finds that Advil Cold & Sinus is the ONLY thing that works for him. I agree it's like magic. I hope it makes a difference for you!
whitznd, I was also very relieved to see the count come down. So sudden, unexpected and tragic! I was so loved by the story of the woman whose house was destroyed, but she just barely survived, then took care of a 4 year old boy whose whole family died. excepting only his mother who was at work and couldn't get past the mud to get home). The woman wrapped the 4 year old in a blanket, told him she is a grandmother and that together they'd figure this out. So sweet! I loved her for that!!

Nice day so far though rain, wind, snow predicted. Has there ever been a longer winter? Probably.
I think climate change is perhaps the most important issue facing us. Reports say that there will be less food, particularly with corn, rice, and wheat because of warming. Our oceans are endangered as well with pollution, and they are rising. There was an old science fiction story that has stayed with me. Scientists put a hologram of an alien space ship into the skies. Earthlings panicked, came together, found a way to cooperate. Then the scientists removed the hologram.
Off today, will go to the pharmacy at get Advil Cold and Sinus. Thanks for the recommend. I'll try almost anything.

David's reading Al Gore's The Future, says it authenticates what is happening to the environment now,and his predictions are dire. He's a brilliant man. I wonder what our country would look like today with respect to global climate change, the economy, the national dialogue had he been elected. Got an email from Shirlee during my nap. This is it, in part: not good news. Surgery will be scheduled before Easter. More tests and OK requested from primary care doc. But should be OK for our first week-end in May
so says the tongue doc! This seems to involve a bit more
area than was expected. Keep your fingers and toes crossed!
She asked me to tell the blog about it, she's very tired from all the to-ing and fro-ing today. She'll be going to Brenda's post op.

I'm sorry, Shirlee, to hear that the area is more extensive than first known, but glad that there is a remedy. I'm sure you are tired. It's always a shock, I think, to know that something is wrong, needs to be corrected. The good is that there is the technology and knowledge to do it.
A friend of mine just had cataract surgery, and there will have to be another to further correct, but she is glad the correction is possible.
We take our bodies so for granted, or I do, expect it to be always able and fit, and darn, it just isn't the case. I guess it teaches patience, empathy, resilience, but do I really want to learn all that stuff?? Guess I have no choice, but glad there are remedies.

We went to Taco Tuesday tonight. In April, many show up because we all have cabin fever. I really like the people here: so many different life experiences, an honesty, openness, independence, generosity. We were telling stories of our evacuation. Many stayed on the mountain,and they had some great tales.

Human Rights Committee in Geneva on Thursday condemned the United States for criminalizing homelessness, calling it "cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment" that violates international human rights treaty obligations. It also called upon the U.S. government to take corrective action, following a two-day review of U.S. government compliance with a human rights treaty ratified in 1992.
"I'm just simply baffled by the idea that people can be without shelter in a country, and then be treated as criminals for being without shelter," said Sir Nigel Rodley, chairman of the committee in closing statements on the U.S. review. "The idea of criminalizing people who don't have shelter is something that I think many of my colleagues might find as difficult as I do to even begin to comprehend."
The Committee called on the U.S. to abolish criminalization of homelessness laws and policies at state and local levels, intensify efforts to find solutions for homeless people in accordance with human rights standards and offer incentives for decriminalization, including giving local authorities funding for implementing alternatives and withholding funding for criminalizing the homeless.
Those recommendations run counter to the current trends in the nation.

From Shirlee: update on today's high jinks.
There will be no surgery tomorrow because another small
spot was found on my left tonsil. I have had for several years
a bend at the top of my spine that makes it difficult to administer anesthetic safely. My tongue doc wants me to see a more specialized group in W-S. If they call with an appointment
will keep it. But I won't be committing to more extensive
testing or surgery for now. Picked daughter Dana's brain for
questions to ask about alternative care.

We got a most pleasant surprise today! We are invited to our daughter-in-law's graduation (as a Registered Nurse) on May 17th! Naturally we assumed that her parents, husband and daughters would fill her ticket allowance, but apparently they hold the graduation in a huge civic center! Yay!!!

I love living in Vermont where you can trust your state Reps to actually represent you. A bill in Congress, which I have been cheering on for years, has a real hope of passing soon; and it has once again been supported by the Vermont State Legislature, in the form of a Resolution which easily passed both House and Senate. In fact, it passed on March 18th, long before I thought it would!
H.R. 485, The National Nurse Act of 2013, would make the role of the Chief Nurse Officer more visible to the average American, highlight the vital role of nurses, and put the emphasis in healthcare on Prevention. Go Nurses!
And as you may know, the National Nurse Initiative began with Dean blogger Teri Mills! She is still very active in the effort and I salute her sticktoitiveness! She deserves a Howardly!
Tonight, my first peepers!! Most years, the first peepers are followed within a week by the last snow. . . . But they're two weeks later than normal, so maybe not this time.

Looks like it could be a nice day. It seems like almost every day we hear of a weather event: tornadoes, mud slides, tsunamis, earthquakes, blizzards and snow in the same place.
I'm reading Al Gore's The Future. The research and evidence compiled and explained brings coherence to the massive changes we are witnessing in technology, climate, the work place, communication, energy, literacy, cultures, and transportation. We were talking this morning. I remember being startled in the 80s when my mother was in her 70s and didn't get the gist of a cartoon in the newspaper. I can't imagine what she would think of the technology today.
Anyway, I think Gore's book i s brilliant, a must read to try to understand the evolutionary changes going on. He says that for the first time in human history, we are in charge of evolution and makes a persuasive case.
Listener, how wonderful that you love where you live. Vermont seems to me like a very sane, progressive state, and Colorado relied on the expertise of people who managed the floods there.
