I am also thinking of a little different "labor day" as our second granddaughter turned 7 today.
We had a banner day for the celebration!! Grand Ivy got a pony (a real one) and a life vest to wear when they go rowing on their pond in her rowboat. Everyone had a blast! It was incredibly hot, though. 86F and humid, vicious in the sunshine, but fine in the shade by the pond. Grand Ivy has very strong arms and can row one oar while an adult does the other. She kept up with anyone and had some silly fun rowing in circles just for fun, which caught the attention of the horses on the hill, who enjoyed the entertainment. LOL!
Yes, indeed, Jo and thank you Puddle for reminding us. My father belonged to the Teamsters Union for a while when we lived in the Detroit area. He drove a truck picking up live poultry from the farm wives--late 1930's and 1940's for a small poultry cleaning business. In the 1940's we moved out to the mid-Michigan country side where he began his own business. That move was good for the family, but much to my 12 year old disgust. Here I was back with the same gang of farm kids I started school with!
Busy week last week, and it looks like this will be too. I met a member of our community last night who said they go into town once every ten days, that everything they try to do is intentional. I thought of Thoreau and his comment about living intentionally. I wish I could do that.
I've enjoyed your posts, hearing how you all are doing. Listener, the new home and land for your family sounds like a paradise. Puddle, I hope that the medication becomes available soon for you. Life is such a great gift.

The last Carolina Parakeet (conuuropsis carolines) known to humans was Incas. Incas died on February 21st, 1918. Incas, his keepers at the Cincinnati Zoo claim, died of a broken heart, not of old age, even though he and his mate, Lady Jane, had lived in the zoo for over 32 years. Lady Jane died the summer before Incas died and he pined through the fall and winter.
FYI, it was in the same cage the last known Passenger Pigeon, Martha died in.
Sooo, I had my evaluation at work today. We respond to essay questions, turn it in and make an appointment with the Director. Today was the appointment part. She gave me a page with comments about my work. All good! We are all asked to engage our library patrons a bit less, just for the sake of quiet. I am invited to actually work more slowly! (I love this job!) But my favourite comment she made about me was "treats children with respect." Awesome! Feel free to write on my tombstone*, "She treated children with respect."
(*except that I may be sprinkled instead of buried. LOL!)
My new computer is coming together slowly as I remove stuff from the old one and transfer over. It would take at least one entire day of concentration if I ever had that. My old machine has been a nightmare ever since I first got it. Just never worked correctly even after HP put in 2 new motherboards, 3 new hard drives and a new power supply. That box just seemed to be jinxed so it's gone. Tired of sinking money into it. The final straw came when it decided to not boot up any more.
Wonderful new computer repair store about 4 blocks from home with great, tech savvy youngsters running it. They will be our new goto shop when we have problems.
So happy to have this space where good friends can gather and share good times and bad. Much love to you all.

Shirlee, I just read that J.R.R. Tolkien studied the Icelandic Eddas and took many of the ideas from them: trolls, elves, the landscape. He even learned the language and taught it. It certainly is a contender for the epic of our times.

Do we have a friendly hobbit community here each in our comfy little houses with full larders? We all seem to have had the same information about Tolkien for years. I just discovered the companion recently at our new bookstore . It has been most helpful. I am now on a search for the cd version of TLOR read by Rob Inglis who did all of Tolkien's work. It is out of print so have daughter Dana scouring Amazon for a copy. I knew this was a true bookman here when he told me it was not available. He said "list to the world" with grief in his voice. My alarm clock. My ONLY clock, really (save for the computer) died last night. I'm trying to figure out how to get up in time for the doc's apt on Tuesday, with no clock. . . .
hon just tell yourself what time you want to awake when you lay down to go to sleep. try it out tonight, it works if you just focus on the time for a minute or two. I haven't had an alarm clock in at least 15 years and have only overslept once, when I was sick.

I was introduced to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by my best friend's older sister. It was the late fifties, and she'd had to order TLOTR from England. It didn't become an American cult till after I was married and had my kids, lol! Though I *did* always feel that 33 was about right for coming of age. . . .
Puddle, are you reverting to what scientist consider a more circadian rhythm of 25 hrs? That's what folks fall into when they go down into caves to completely eliminate sunlight.
Still battling computer problems and won't be done until the weekend when I can enlist Burt to wrangle the wires behind the desk. Sigh... I hate doing this stuff. I'm actually using the computer I'm going to get rid of to write this. and the cursor keeps jumping around like a demented monkey. So I can't spend much time.
NEWS! Our daughter-in-law who graduated Summa Cum Laude in May just got the nursing job of her dreams! She has just accepted a job as a labor & delivery nurse at a top of the line, family-centered medical center which offers: private labor rooms, spouse/coach can stay overnight and have free meals, many alternatives to medication such as acupressure and aromatherapy, even hypnosis, breastfeeding is strongly encouraged and supported, and babies stay in mom's room. :-)
Congratulations on your dil's new job, Listener. More nurses in this area needed. And Puddle will make her doc appointment--congrats! Cool, gray, humid weather here in GSO. Strange. Love to all.

I think I mentioned here that Grand Ivy got a pony for her 7th birthday last week. They got so busy moving to the new house and horse farm that the pony got ridden very little for about a month. So now they are getting back to a good routine. But guess what. On Sunday, Grand Ivy was riding on him when he spooked and REARED STRAIGHT UP!! Thankfully she hung onto that pony like Spiderwoman and did not fall. She yelled "Daddy! Daddy!" and he was already running to her, grabbed her and had to tell her to let go, because she was clinging so tightly. Her Mom was also right here, on a horse behind her, and had the sense to dismount and secure her horse, then JUMP and grab the reins of the pony and get him down again. She then worked him hard for awhile as a disciplinary measure. Mom also got Grand Ivy up on her own horse right away, so she wouldn't be afraid of riding. They did a good debriefing with her.
Two hours later Grand Ivy arrived at our house with a story to tell! So we helped her process it. As she told me the story in her own words, I wrote it down. Amazingly, she dictated the story saying "New Page" where she could imagine another picture of what happened. Then she illustrated it! So I photographed her illustrations and typed in her words, and by the time she went home the next day we had printed out 5 copies of her book! :-)
We love her tons and are so deeply thankful that she wasn't hurt!!!
clip... I don’t like making election eve predictions, but I’m going to hazard a guess here and say Cuomo will eke out a victory Tuesday night. With a lot of help, Hochul probably will, too, but that’s a little less certain. The moderate Buffalo Democrat was supposed to help Cuomo secure votes outside Manhattan, since the governor was, of course, looking past the primary to November. Instead she became a liability: The New York Times even endorsed Wu, while making no endorsement for the governor’s seat, a stunning rebuke to Cuomo. Which is why Hochul was spending some of her premium hand-shaking time campaigning on the Upper West Side, the capital of New York Times country.
Thank you to all that supported this campaign--you actually are the heart of what we did. You are a powerful fearless fighting force that will hold power to account, and proved that there is power in traditional Democratic values. He beat us 2 to 1 after spending millions, and look at where we won outright!
Such fantastic numbers for Zephyer! She'll do even better next time! That's 30 counties with an average of 59.29%. Of course, I have no idea of how many counties there are in NY, but I think those numbers are fantastic!
Lots of really good news from the "family"! An author at 7! nice going.
It was a really nice day. We both took the day off, slept until 10am ( ! ), then went for lunch at a favourite cafe, poked around in a few shops, visited the place we'll have our family Christmas gathering, then came home and had ice cream and watched a movie. Ahhhhhhhhh.
Now we're getting ready to go get our passports renewed. All this so we can go into Canada sometimes, being only an hour from the border. We'd only need an enhanced Vermont driver's license, but feel the passport is just that much smarter, since our kids travel to places like Brazil, India and Europe.
Well, they finally made me sign on to the patient portal. Actually, I didn't--Holly did. I only kept getting this message:

puddle I think that you will love that, it makes things so much easier for me. most of my doctors, specialists etc are connected via our hospital and I can see test results as soon as they are available, get refills, send my docs a message. it tells me every apt that I have scheduled and how long it is, where it is, who it is with, which has been very helpful with all of the referrals that I have been getting to have my various parts checked out!!
I have good luck with three portals,--primary care doc, Rheumatologist, and now tongue and neck surgeon.
I love being able to let Daughter Dana have a look at my lab work and double check that things are not too far out of line. The primary care was the first to get on-line and took them a bit to get the glitches out and I had a hard time getting used to it. It is, however a vast improvement over having the nurse call me at 8:15 AM the next morning to let me know I could continue with my RA meds!!!
I have avoided patient portals like the plague. My main concern is that it takes the human element out of the relationship a little too much. I don't just want lab results, I want an interpretation and explanation of those results. Had I read my path lab results after my myeomectomy, I'd have thought I had cancer, because of the use of certain terms, but that was quickly explained by my doctor who called with the results. I also don't like the idea of my appointments just being there online and no check-in to be sure we're all on the same page about it. (I have experienced some errors.) Generally speaking, I am still not comfortable with all my personal data being online, what with all the hacking, in or out of the Cloud.
But, I suppose I'll have to join the racing human race one of these days.
sorry you are so against it listener. it doesn't take the personal out at all, my docs add their notes to the results and tell me when to expect a call to discuss. the office still calls me to remind me of an apt a day or two before. the difference to me is that it has all my medical info in one spot. I think a lot of people avoid it because they assume a lot about it that just isn't so! and frankly your records may already be on the net, they don't set the account up when you contact them, it is already there and all they do is connect you to it so that you can see it. there is also a lot that we can't access, no matter what doc I see in the network they can see every test, x-ay, drug, reaction and office visit, etc in just a few moments. I just switched doctors, to a different FAHC office and it was a breeze.

Anthony's Almonds. The unblanched is cheaper than the blanched. I like both so try both before deciding for good. Makes *terrific* waffles, and great biscuits. May try crackers this time around, lol! If you know you like it, Honeyville sells the very cheapest (per pound) but you have to buy 25 pounds at once, and the upfront price is considerable.
Jo! I buy the Almond Meal made by Bob's Red Mill, right at Price Chopper. If Hannaford's has that brand they likely carry it. But it's pricey..abut $14/lb.
You're probably right. My former doc's office really dropped the ball in a number of ways when they went to the new computerised office system. The doc stopped looking me in the eye and talking in favor of staring at her computer screen and typing. The office stopped making calls if you are on the patient portal. I opted not to sign up for it at the new office. Maybe I should give them a chance, or at least ask more questions when I go in for my checkup next month. Thanks.
listener I think everyone uses the system in different ways - my old doc (ditched her a couple of weeks ago after almost 3 years of thinking on it) also got to the point of staring at the screen rather than looking at me while talking to me and often did not answer my questions at all. of the 6 other docs, PAs and specialists I've seen recently and ALL of the nurses, every one of them engaged me rather than their computer screen but did a great job of documenting what we discussed. the report on my wrist exam and injection was extensive and the PA that I saw at the spine institute wrote such a thorough report that I thought she must have been taping our conversation, but of course she wasn't! she obviously paid close attention and we had very good eye contact and she asked questions that I didn't expect. yup, if they're a bad doc I think it will show up in their eyes glued to a screen. I have been very happy with all of my docs. my eye doc had a nurse taking notes of our conversation and his findings as he checked my eyes and he provided a very extensive report as well.
this is all in my favor because Social Security was thinking of having me go to one of their docs and decided against it because my docs' reports were so good. I should know in a few weeks if I am eligible for disability and it is sounding very probable. if I do get it, it will be a lifesaver for me.

Well, the news of the week is that my fasting blood sugar is way too high. My doc had an A1c done in her office on Tuesday. Got the results this afternoon: 6.7. I officially either pre-diabetic or outright diabetic, but too low to treat. Which is good since diabetic meds are pretty much killers. So I'm back to lo carb sans wheat. Strict version. They need two A1c's before diagnosing outright.

puddle, I'm glad it wasn't higher. What's normal for you? Normal for me is mid-way in the pre-diabetic range.
I think I may have gotten a bit higher recently, as I was diagnosed today with a skin yeast infection. Turns out by doing the elliptical in hot weather this summer, I triggered a yeast infection. I had no idear that's what it was, and was chugging along with home remedies until enough was enough. I should be right as rain soon. I'll be watching the sugar intake more, though, since I know sugar feeds yeast.
We drove out to the Sandbar at Lake Chaplain late evening, but he Northern Lights were a bust. Sigh. We've seen them here before, but it's been years. My favourite memory is when the entire dome of the sky was covered, as if someone had dumped a can of paint on our atmosphere. It happened on November 8th one year in '89 or '90.
listener I saw a photo of the northern lighta on WCAX that was said to be from Missisqoi Bay but when I searched for the image it was actually from Maine. there were a number of good photos from Maine, but I could find none from VT!

hon just tell yourself what time you want to awake when you lay down to go to sleep. try it out tonight, it works if you just focus on the time for a minute or two. I haven't had an alarm clock in at least 15 years and have only overslept once, when I was sick.

NEWS! Our daughter-in-law who graduated Summa Cum Laude in May just got the nursing job of her dreams! She has just accepted a job as a labor & delivery nurse at a top of the line, family-centered medical center which offers: private labor rooms, spouse/coach can stay overnight and have free meals, many alternatives to medication such as acupressure and aromatherapy, even hypnosis, breastfeeding is strongly encouraged and supported, and babies stay in mom's room. :-)

I think I mentioned here that Grand Ivy got a pony for her 7th birthday last week. They got so busy moving to the new house and horse farm that the pony got ridden very little for about a month. So now they are getting back to a good routine. But guess what. On Sunday, Grand Ivy was riding on him when he spooked and REARED STRAIGHT UP!! Thankfully she hung onto that pony like Spiderwoman and did not fall. She yelled "Daddy! Daddy!" and he was already running to her, grabbed her and had to tell her to let go, because she was clinging so tightly. Her Mom was also right here, on a horse behind her, and had the sense to dismount and secure her horse, then JUMP and grab the reins of the pony and get him down again. She then worked him hard for awhile as a disciplinary measure. Mom also got Grand Ivy up on her own horse right away, so she wouldn't be afraid of riding. They did a good debriefing with her.
Two hours later Grand Ivy arrived at our house with a story to tell! So we helped her process it. As she told me the story in her own words, I wrote it down. Amazingly, she dictated the story saying "New Page" where she could imagine another picture of what happened. Then she illustrated it! So I photographed her illustrations and typed in her words, and by the time she went home the next day we had printed out 5 copies of her book! :-)
We love her tons and are so deeply thankful that she wasn't hurt!!!

With a lot of help, Hochul probably will, too, but that’s a little less certain. The moderate Buffalo Democrat was supposed to help Cuomo secure votes outside Manhattan, since the governor was, of course, looking past the primary to November. Instead she became a liability: The New York Times even endorsed Wu, while making no endorsement for the governor’s seat, a stunning rebuke to Cuomo. Which is why Hochul was spending some of her premium hand-shaking time campaigning on the Upper West Side, the capital of New York Times country.

It was a really nice day. We both took the day off, slept until 10am ( ! ), then went for lunch at a favourite cafe, poked around in a few shops, visited the place we'll have our family Christmas gathering, then came home and had ice cream and watched a movie. Ahhhhhhhhh.

We took today off too, and slept 'til NOON! Ha!
Now we're getting ready to go get our passports renewed. All this so we can go into Canada sometimes, being only an hour from the border. We'd only need an enhanced Vermont driver's license, but feel the passport is just that much smarter, since our kids travel to places like Brazil, India and Europe.

So Holly set me up. I still get the above page about half the time; the other half, it takes ten minutes to load a page. And half of that, the connection times out.
The outfit that handles it is seen in the biz as a very good deal. Forgive me if I don't see it.
puddle I think that you will love that, it makes things so much easier for me. most of my doctors, specialists etc are connected via our hospital and I can see test results as soon as they are available, get refills, send my docs a message. it tells me every apt that I have scheduled and how long it is, where it is, who it is with, which has been very helpful with all of the referrals that I have been getting to have my various parts checked out!!
that may be a one-on glitch, I have great success with my portal. may not be handled by the same bunch though.
I have good luck with three portals,--primary care doc,
Rheumatologist, and now tongue and neck surgeon.
I love being able to let Daughter Dana have a look at my lab work and double check that things are not too far out of line. The primary care was the first to get on-line and took them a bit to get the glitches out and I had a hard time getting used to it. It is, however a vast improvement over having the nurse call me at 8:15 AM the next morning to let me know I could continue with my RA meds!!!
I have avoided patient portals like the plague. My main concern is that it takes the human element out of the relationship a little too much. I don't just want lab results, I want an interpretation and explanation of those results. Had I read my path lab results after my myeomectomy, I'd have thought I had cancer, because of the use of certain terms, but that was quickly explained by my doctor who called with the results. I also don't like the idea of my appointments just being there online and no check-in to be sure we're all on the same page about it. (I have experienced some errors.) Generally speaking, I am still not comfortable with all my personal data being online, what with all the hacking, in or out of the Cloud.
But, I suppose I'll have to join the racing human race one of these days.
puddle, I'm sure it works fabulously well if you're NOT on dial-up!
On other fronts: my almond flour came from Amazon and Nancy got me five avocados AND triple creme brie from Costco!!

sorry you are so against it listener. it doesn't take the personal out at all, my docs add their notes to the results and tell me when to expect a call to discuss. the office still calls me to remind me of an apt a day or two before. the difference to me is that it has all my medical info in one spot. I think a lot of people avoid it because they assume a lot about it that just isn't so! and frankly your records may already be on the net, they don't set the account up when you contact them, it is already there and all they do is connect you to it so that you can see it. there is also a lot that we can't access, no matter what doc I see in the network they can see every test, x-ay, drug, reaction and office visit, etc in just a few moments. I just switched doctors, to a different FAHC office and it was a breeze.

Anthony's Almonds. The unblanched is cheaper than the blanched. I like both so try both before deciding for good. Makes *terrific* waffles, and great biscuits. May try crackers this time around, lol! You're probably right. My former doc's office really dropped the ball in a number of ways when they went to the new computerised office system. The doc stopped looking me in the eye and talking in favor of staring at her computer screen and typing. The office stopped making calls if you are on the patient portal. I opted not to sign up for it at the new office. Maybe I should give them a chance, or at least ask more questions when I go in for my checkup next month. Thanks.

listener I think everyone uses the system in different ways - my old doc (ditched her a couple of weeks ago after almost 3 years of thinking on it) also got to the point of staring at the screen rather than looking at me while talking to me and often did not answer my questions at all. of the 6 other docs, PAs and specialists I've seen recently and ALL of the nurses, every one of them engaged me rather than their computer screen but did a great job of documenting what we discussed. the report on my wrist exam and injection was extensive and the PA that I saw at the spine institute wrote such a thorough report that I thought she must have been taping our conversation, but of course she wasn't! she obviously paid close attention and we had very good eye contact and she asked questions that I didn't expect. yup, if they're a bad doc I think it will show up in their eyes glued to a screen. I have been very happy with all of my docs. my eye doc had a nurse taking notes of our conversation and his findings as he checked my eyes and he provided a very extensive report as well.
this is all in my favor because Social Security was thinking of having me go to one of their docs and decided against it because my docs' reports were so good. I should know in a few weeks if I am eligible for disability and it is sounding very probable. if I do get it, it will be a lifesaver for me.

Jo, I was able to get back on. I copied the URL you sent and pasted it into my browser, and nothing. I didn't realize you had highlighted the URL, and David clicked on it, and voila.
I briefly scanned the messages, and will read more carefully later on. My computer crashed, and frankly, I've been lucky for 14 years with no problems. Best Buy's Geek Squad found lots of viruses and malware. Free virus protection programs are not as good as those you pay for, I was told. I'm using Webroot now, and we'll see.
Anyway, back up and the blog is here. I lost all my bookmarks when David deleted my browser.

Well, the news of the week is that my fasting blood sugar is way too high. My doc had an A1c done in her office on Tuesday. Got the results this afternoon: 6.7. I officially either pre-diabetic or outright diabetic, but too low to treat. Which is good since diabetic meds are pretty much killers. So I'm back to lo carb sans wheat. Strict version. They need two A1c's before diagnosing outright.

puddle, I'm glad it wasn't higher. What's normal for you? Normal for me is mid-way in the pre-diabetic range.
I think I may have gotten a bit higher recently, as I was diagnosed today with a skin yeast infection. Turns out by doing the elliptical in hot weather this summer, I triggered a yeast infection. I had no idear that's what it was, and was chugging along with home remedies until enough was enough. I should be right as rain soon. I'll be watching the sugar intake more, though, since I know sugar feeds yeast.
Never get old. ;-)
We drove out to the Sandbar at Lake Chaplain late evening, but he Northern Lights were a bust. Sigh.
We've seen them here before, but it's been years. My favourite memory is when the entire dome of the sky was covered, as if someone had dumped a can of paint on our atmosphere. It happened on November 8th one year in '89 or '90.
listener I saw a photo of the northern lighta on WCAX that was said to be from Missisqoi Bay but when I searched for the image it was actually from Maine. there were a number of good photos from Maine, but I could find none from VT!
