The flood just might come this coming week, at least to the east coast, thanks to Category 5 Hurricane Matthew churning up the Caribbean! This is one scary storm; it's about to turn north and could churn all the way up the east coast. Please keep an eye on it!
We had rain two nights ago ...that felt to me like tropical storm/ hurricane spinoff....sudden, viscious and scary....it must have run into a cold front ... a few minutes in we got a little hail downtown.....on the NE edge of town where Brenda lives there was much more.
Any ideas on how the old-fashioned regular Republicans are going to vote this year? Will they stick with the party....or recognize the horrendous choice?

After the driest August in many many years, and a mostly dry September, this last week has been RAINY!!! But so dry is the dirt, the river hasn't risen even a scosh.
I don't know Shirlee, don't know that many rePublicans. My ex said he'd sit this one out, but that was months ago. As for my sibs, I left my parents' religion, but kept their politics, but most of them have done the reverse. I try not to think about it. I have to say, it takes a very special person to be a Democrat in Utah. Most won't/don't have that kind of courage. Easier not to be odd man out. I likely would have, but I'm a curmudgeon. Convince me once, I stay convinced till the basis changes.
Struggling to recall what Trump’s ramblings, with their telegraphic simplifications, their abrupt disconnects, and their sudden hallucinations of imaginary figures, reminded me of, I realized that they were exactly like an excerpt from the dying words of the gangster Dutch Schultz after he was shot in a mob hit in Newark, in 1935: “Please get me up, my friends. . . . No payrolls. No wells. No coupons. That would be entirely out. Pardon me; I forgot I am plaintiff and not defendant. Look out. Look out for him. Please. He owed me money; he owes everyone money.”

I know my daughter...dedicated R.. will just not vote this year. The rest of the gang are Dems ...and will vote except for my son....who does not vote....says No Difference in parties. He is a kind, compromising guy and I think just does not like arguments of any kind.....my family...the Murphys thrived on political arguments....his father's family were old fashioned Republicans..but not politically active. I convinced his father webWERE going to vote...and if he had any sense he had better vote Dem.

What a strange hurricane! All this time and still no human or computer can say where Matthew is headed. That makes it hard to give people fair warning. But so far it could hit anywhere along the east coast from Florida to Maine. Keep an eye on it, puddle; one of the possible tracks has it going your way. This is really one for the history books!

Prayers ensuing for the poor people of Haiti, who have had so much trauma and now more. OY! we lasted a half hour. Just couldn't take it. I was saddened at Kaine's display of agressiveness and poor manners, he came across to us as angry. Pence just lied and lied. There was so much more that Kaine could have gone after: The Evangelical thing The fact that he wants abortion illegal The fact that he feels there should be a funeral for aborted fetuses (WTH???) Women's rights would be stripped.
Basically, we couldn't stand the interrupting the talking over. I strongly feel that the moderator should have the ability to turn off their mics.
Still busy here. Soon the highway closes, so we continue to make appointments, stock up on necessities, and generally plan for when we can't get down to Loveland without it being a 2 hour trip one way.
We watched the last 30 minutes of the debate. It was unpleasant. Trump is a throwback to the culture I grew up in the 40s, 50s, and 60s: misogynist, racist, bigotted, hierarchical, homogeneous, restricted and constricted. I wonder how many women my age have never been insulted by a man. One of the first was a 6th grade friend: You have hairy legs! he shouted at me. When applying for financial aid at U. of Michigan, the man who interviewed me told me I had no business being in college as a B- student. Let me talk to someone else, I said. The woman who helped me was the dean and I came away with a grant and a National Defense Loan.
Trump reaffirms those old cultural dictims, reassures those who have never questioned them, brings a sense of righteousness and security. Frankly, Gary Trudeau couldn't caricature Trump as much Trump does himself. Trump is a mirror of the worst, the most oppressive, the most egotistical and ridiculous attributes of that culture.
Meanwhile, we had a wind and the glorious golds, reds, oranges, and yellows have flown away. But, how beautiful, how beautiful.

While I don't know Hillary Clinton and did not like how she campaigned against Obama, she has devoted most of her life to public service, incurred the wrath and maligning of the right wing and misogynists. She has done many good things, understands the system, and knows where it is corrupted and in decline. I can't imagine how someone in public service for 30 years could be without faults or mistakes, but I've come to the conclusion, this is her time, this is our time, and the election will reveal who and what we are in values, understanding of the system, and what we stand for. I pray, and I mean that, that she will be elected along with a Democratic Congress.

I've been watching Hurricane Matthew's progress in the Carribean. That's one scary storm, and I have loved ones in harm's way. A few left and one decided to stay. She's 25 miles inland, but also near the place where the, likely Category 4, hurricane is expected to graze the coast or even make landfall. I'll be glad when it's over and done!

I just finished reading "Trumptown: How a West Virginia county turned deep red." by Larissa MacFarquhar in the Oct. 10th New Yorker. This is the New Yorker with the cartoon of Trump as a beauty queen and banner saying Miss Congeniality on the cover. the gist of the article is why and how Logan County West Virginia went Republican and even Democrats favoring Trump. What comes across is the many generations of families that have lived there and the feeling of community so strong it could be called family. I thought of your friend who helps out with shopping and other things.
That's pretty rare I think. So many of us left our childhood homes, and now can rarely visit any family who remained. The people in Logan County, of course, are concerned with the mining industry, but also the sense that foreigners, immigrants and others get help and they don't. The poverty, according to the author and those she interviewed is extensive, though maybe tourism will grow. I think she depicted the loss of home as something permanent for many of us, whereas West Virginians return even though they have more opportunities in other places. It was an interesting article, and I felt distress for people who live in a beautiful state, love it, and find little opportunity. That helped mitigate some of the depiction of Trump supporters as haters, (though racism is still endemic there, the author said) and more as people who don't feel the government of the U.S. cares about them. Trump's defiance and supposed solidarity is appealing to them.

Thanks for your thoughts, Puddle....we had a lot of rain yesterday...but not enough to keep Brenda from her Friday night visit....but kept me from my evening walk! Today is a little more chancy....with wind and rain. GSO is far enough inland that we should be safe.....unless Duke Energy is in their usual unprepared state and our electricity goes out. That might happen if the wind speed picks up. I just re-assured Brenda that I have plenty of everything in case it is unsafe for her to get out tomorrow. Sunday is the day she does weekly grocery, etc. shopping for me....before we have dinner together.

They started *really* sinking after the Dems divested themselves of the southern democrats in the mid sixties. Always had been a bit greedier, hidden under the label of fiscal responsibility. But after Nixon and Lee Atwater got working on it--very slippery slope. I think a decade later, Eisenhower wouldn't have voted to go Republican. . . .

Warm today. Yesterday, David and I were at the Big Thompson Canyon Building selling DVD's David made from photos and articles saved by a member of our community. The Bobcat Fire was a 10,000 acre fire with 25 homes lost. The proceeds from the sale go to the Volunteer Fire fighters, but today, I'm really tired. We are glad to contribute to this community. When people need help, people come and help with food, transportation, staying as care takers over night. We sold 7 DVD packages and gave the Fire Fighters the $80 dollars people donated. Not much, but something.

You'll love this story...Youngest texted to ask if we have a Baby Deer (stuffed animal), because they left both of (age 3) VT*Grandson's in NH at his other grandparents' house. We don't, and the little guy was freaking out, as he can't sleep without it. But VT*Grand (age 9, and two times away) has two, so Uncle met them half way. The ironic thing is that the reason they each have two is that their first got lost (and found) at some point. The sweet thing is that we have purchased all of them. I guess I'd best buy one more, to keep on hand. Also, we have been asked to go to NH for two days in NH to be evening childcare for our 3 year old and 1 year old grands, during their Auntie's wedding. We said Sure! And they will have a room there for us, too. Sounds like fun! :-D
HRC is holding her own, well, I think. She is definitely the better candidate. (Duh.) Nevertheless, I ache for Bernie. I have been listening for several months, wondering what to do. Good Morning, Whew! The ugliest so-called debate I've ever seen. How did we get so low? Even in high school debate, we were prohibited from ad hominem attacks. Trump threatened Hillary with prosecution and jail, was unable to address or answer any of the questions of the moderators, admitted he hasn't paid taxes in years, and continued to denigrate and demean throughout. Interesting that Robert Oler on Facebook insists that Trump will win.
I think of Howard Dean and how enthusiastic and supportive we were and how heart sick when he lost to the DNC manipulating the caucuses, and the outrageous mockery of the media and when he shouted. His leadership in getting Barack Obama elected was wonderful, the 50 State Strategy. I'll always be grateful for his effort and commitment. Yes, it was disappointing that he became a lobbyist, but then again, I'm not sure what his duties were or what companies he represented. To be a politician is to be subject to mistakes, to what can be perceived as deceptions, disingenuousness, and flip flops. I think Hillary falls into that category as well.
I have read that Democrat registration to vote is down, below even the 2014 levels. And yes, I am worried. I can't imagine what would happen should Trump be elected. Bernie Sanders has said that we must vote and vote for Hillary. We can't risk a Trump presidency. Whew!

I think popularity is one of the most superficial attributes, but so much in our society runs on it. As a high school kid, I thought of how damaging it could be. Some wonderful people were disregarded and kept out of many of the groups and activities because they didn't fit the general standard of popularity.
To have political elections so dependent on popularity seems to me destructive, a trivial way to look at people especially when so many issues are complicated and and there is no real answer to the consequences that will be incurred because of a particular decision. But, we care, we read, we discuss, and then we make our decisions. I think that's something we can do and we do with responsibility and our best efforts.
I wonder if in our polarized society so dependent on sound bytes and ideology if we will at some point rise above that, discuss issues in themselves, and agree to compromise when we have to? I have hope.

What a strange hurricane! All this time and still no human or computer can say where Matthew is headed. That makes it hard to give people fair warning. But so far it could hit anywhere along the east coast from Florida to Maine. Keep an eye on it, puddle; one of the possible tracks has it going your way. This is really one for the history books!
Shirlee, you might be west enough to avoid trouble from Hurricane Matthew. At least his west side is the least destructive. Prayers ensuing for the poor people of Haiti, who have had so much trauma and now more. Imagine deforested hillsides, 40" of rain in two days, and 55,000 people still living in tents since the 2010 earthquake...!

I almost didn't listen, since I'm convinced that the VP debates *never* matter one iota. But did. I think it was a wash, but truly wished our guy hadn't been as rude as Trump.
OY! we lasted a half hour. Just couldn't take it. I was saddened at Kaine's display of agressiveness and poor manners, he came across to us as angry. Pence just lied and lied. There was so much more that Kaine could have gone after:
The Evangelical thing
The fact that he wants abortion illegal
The fact that he feels there should be a funeral for aborted fetuses (WTH???)
Women's rights would be stripped.
Basically, we couldn't stand the interrupting the talking over. I strongly feel that the moderator should have the ability to turn off their mics.

Still busy here. Soon the highway closes, so we continue to make appointments, stock up on necessities, and generally plan for when we can't get down to Loveland without it being a 2 hour trip one way.
We watched the last 30 minutes of the debate. It was unpleasant. Trump is a throwback to the culture I grew up in the 40s, 50s, and 60s: misogynist, racist, bigotted, hierarchical, homogeneous, restricted and constricted. I wonder how many women my age have never been insulted by a man. One of the first was a 6th grade friend: You have hairy legs! he shouted at me. When applying for financial aid at U. of Michigan, the man who interviewed me told me I had no business being in college as a B- student. Let me talk to someone else, I said. The woman who helped me was the dean and I came away with a grant and a National Defense Loan.
Trump reaffirms those old cultural dictims, reassures those who have never questioned them, brings a sense of righteousness and security. Frankly, Gary Trudeau couldn't caricature Trump as much Trump does himself. Trump is a mirror of the worst, the most oppressive, the most egotistical and ridiculous attributes of that culture.
Meanwhile, we had a wind and the glorious golds, reds, oranges, and yellows have flown away. But, how beautiful, how beautiful.

While I don't know Hillary Clinton and did not like how she campaigned against Obama, she has devoted most of her life to public service, incurred the wrath and maligning of the right wing and misogynists. She has done many good things, understands the system, and knows where it is corrupted and in decline. I can't imagine how someone in public service for 30 years could be without faults or mistakes, but I've come to the conclusion, this is her time, this is our time, and the election will reveal who and what we are in values, understanding of the system, and what we stand for. I pray, and I mean that, that she will be elected along with a Democratic Congress.

I've been watching Hurricane Matthew's progress in the Carribean. That's one scary storm, and I have loved ones in harm's way. A few left and one decided to stay. She's 25 miles inland, but also near the place where the, likely Category 4, hurricane is expected to graze the coast or even make landfall. I'll be glad when it's over and done!
Thoughts for folks in Florida and South Carolina. I hope it will diminish, and people and property okay.

I just finished reading "Trumptown: How a West Virginia county turned deep red." by Larissa MacFarquhar in the Oct. 10th New Yorker. This is the New Yorker with the cartoon of Trump as a beauty queen and banner saying Miss Congeniality on the cover.
the gist of the article is why and how Logan County West Virginia went Republican and even Democrats favoring Trump. What comes across is the many generations of families that have lived there and the feeling of community so strong it could be called family. I thought of your friend who helps out with shopping and other things.
That's pretty rare I think. So many of us left our childhood homes, and now can rarely visit any family who remained. The people in Logan County, of course, are concerned with the mining industry, but also the sense that foreigners, immigrants and others get help and they don't. The poverty, according to the author and those she interviewed is extensive, though maybe tourism will grow. I think she depicted the loss of home as something permanent for many of us, whereas West Virginians return even though they have more opportunities in other places. It was an interesting article, and I felt distress for people who live in a beautiful state, love it, and find little opportunity. That helped mitigate some of the depiction of Trump supporters as haters, (though racism is still endemic there, the author said) and more as people who don't feel the government of the U.S. cares about them. Trump's defiance and supposed solidarity is appealing to them.

They started *really* sinking after the Dems divested themselves of the southern democrats in the mid sixties. Always had been a bit greedier, hidden under the label of fiscal responsibility. But after Nixon and Lee Atwater got working on it--very slippery slope. I think a decade later, Eisenhower wouldn't have voted to go Republican. . . .

Warm today. Yesterday, David and I were at the Big Thompson Canyon Building selling DVD's David made from photos and articles saved by a member of our community. The Bobcat Fire was a 10,000 acre fire with 25 homes lost. The proceeds from the sale go to the Volunteer Fire fighters, but today, I'm really tired. We are glad to contribute to this community. When people need help, people come and help with food, transportation, staying as care takers over night. We sold 7 DVD packages and gave the Fire Fighters the $80 dollars people donated. Not much, but something.

You'll love this story...Youngest texted to ask if we have a Baby Deer (stuffed animal), because they left both of (age 3) VT*Grandson's in NH at his other grandparents' house. We don't, and the little guy was freaking out, as he can't sleep without it. But VT*Grand (age 9, and two times away) has two, so Uncle met them half way.
The ironic thing is that the reason they each have two is that their first got lost (and found) at some point. The sweet thing is that we have purchased all of them. I guess I'd best buy one more, to keep on hand.
Also, we have been asked to go to NH for two days in NH to be evening childcare for our 3 year old and 1 year old grands, during their Auntie's wedding. We said Sure! And they will have a room there for us, too. Sounds like fun! :-D
Meanwhile, we are watching the debate. Sigh.

Nevertheless, I ache for Bernie. I have been listening for several months, wondering what to do. But I have decided beyond doubt now that I must write in Bernie's name. I hope you can respect that, especially as Vermont is not a major concern anyway.
I think I'm just going to ignore this mess until Election Day, when I will work at the polls and hope people won't give up on voting, but will show up in droves.

Whew! The ugliest so-called debate I've ever seen. How did we get so low? Even in high school debate, we were prohibited from ad hominem attacks. Trump threatened Hillary with prosecution and jail, was unable to address or answer any of the questions of the moderators, admitted he hasn't paid taxes in years, and continued to denigrate and demean throughout. Interesting that Robert Oler on Facebook insists that Trump will win.
I think of Howard Dean and how enthusiastic and supportive we were and how heart sick when he lost to the DNC manipulating the caucuses, and the outrageous mockery of the media and when he shouted. His leadership in getting Barack Obama elected was wonderful, the 50 State Strategy. I'll always be grateful for his effort and commitment. Yes, it was disappointing that he became a lobbyist, but then again, I'm not sure what his duties were or what companies he represented. To be a politician is to be subject to mistakes, to what can be perceived as deceptions, disingenuousness, and flip flops. I think Hillary falls into that category as well.
I have read that Democrat registration to vote is down, below even the 2014 levels. And yes, I am worried. I can't imagine what would happen should Trump be elected. Bernie Sanders has said that we must vote and vote for Hillary. We can't risk a Trump presidency. Whew!

Yes, Eugene McCarthy was our choice too, and that hurt as well. My two year old son shook hands with him at the Lansing, Michigan airport. Then Howard Dean. Then Bernie Sanders.
I think popularity is one of the most superficial attributes, but so much in our society runs on it. As a high school kid, I thought of how damaging it could be. Some wonderful people were disregarded and kept out of many of the groups and activities because they didn't fit the general standard of popularity.
To have political elections so dependent on popularity seems to me destructive, a trivial way to look at people especially when so many issues are complicated and and there is no real answer to the consequences that will be incurred because of a particular decision. But, we care, we read, we discuss, and then we make our decisions. I think that's something we can do and we do with responsibility and our best efforts.
I wonder if in our polarized society so dependent on sound bytes and ideology if we will at some point rise above that, discuss issues in themselves, and agree to compromise when we have to? I have hope.
