Bright morning here. We need holidays, for the affection, celebration, effort, and hope. We're off to our son's home for Christmas. He will be deep frying a turkey. We'll all bring dishes. Our highway is open to everyone until Jan.3rd. It's been nearly two months since we've traveled it.
An old poem as an offering. Christmas Morning Looking Out at Storm Mountain
Oh rest, Sweet Buddha along the top of the mountain as if peace were possible and we might dream of stars and translucent skies that life was forever a grace beautiful and full and love was never lost.
“To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.
What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.
And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.”
Da Boyz just departed. Lovely time, lovely company, lovely food (surprised them with full turkey dinner!). In a while gonna start the turkey soup in the hot pot. Life is good.
We had a wonderful time also. There were 13 of us at our son and his wife's table. He deep fried a turkey, cooked a ham, and we all brought fixin's. There was an atmosphere of appreciation, mutual interests, and enjoyment. It was one of the best Christmases I've known.
And here's a silly poem for today.

We were told we'd be getting 8-16" with possibility of 20". I cleaned the garage and got the Mini Cooper all tucked in. [It's officially Winter! Ha!] So, the reality? 1-3" in the valley. Maybe 6-10" here, possibility of 12". At least the winds might make it up to 50 instead of only 35. But really, I just want my Blizzard!!!
I know, Pat, I know. You've had more than your fair share this season already! How are you?
Today spring like, temperature in the 50s and sun. The snow is melting, and it's muddy. But, next week, I think on Wednesday, temperature should be 9 degrees and snow for three days. I don't love winter, but I do love the other seasons, in part thanks to winter.
I'm rereading The Catcher in the Rye, thinking I'll give it to my 16 year old Grand Girl. But, it's a downer, Holden is ill, and everything disappoints, angers, and humiliates him. Why, I wonder, was it so popular with our generation. I didn't remember it that way. I may not give it to my girl.
We'll spend a quiet New Years here. When I was in high school and college I was a waitress and worked on New Year's Eve. It's never much appealed to me since.
My day began with being asked to meet 3 year old VT*Grandson and family at the ER, to tend his little sister, as he had been injured...! Metal wind chimes had blown out of their tree and gotten covered with snow. VT*Grandson fell in the yard and got poked in the eye with them! It was very scary, as he was bleeding from eye and nose. So I am very grateful to be able to tell you it was "just" a corneal abrasion and he will be fine. =Whew!=
VT*Granddaughter was was such a little joy in the waiting room. She was greeting people as they came in and creating lots of smiles. She brought stuffed bear Spencer T. Bear over to an elderly woman who was waiting worriedly and made her smile. At one point, a man came in dressed in a navy blue sweatsuit with gray hair, not white, but otherwise looking just like Santa Claus. Everly brightened when she saw him and said what I think was "Santa!" He didn't catch it, but it was pretty cute. I later heard that when they first arrived she though the guy with the white beard (and tattoos and skullcap) was Santa, and made her family giggle. I want to see the world the way she does...always.
The little guy gave his Mama a kiss goodnight tonight and whispered, "Sweet dreams, Mama." All's well that ends like that!
VT*Granddaughter is 15 months old. An older gentleman was waiting and asked about her. He was melted by her sweetness. Only after about 15 min of her interacting with him (on and off) did I see him called in for his turn. HE was the patient! I was so glad we could help him wait to be seen!
You seem to have an outstanding stable of grands, listener!! Gosh, what a totally freaky accident! Glad he's good.
I'm making a batch of the world's very best cookies, to include some in Nancy's gift which goes out tomorrow (mail run). Not bad that I (and Beau) get the rest, lol!
Pat, Catcher is the only whole book I'm certain my second has ever read. He's hyper-active, and few things can hold him that long.
Interesting families Puddle and Listener. My new little ones... ggrandsare in Blatimore, Grand Rapids, MI and Kansas. Lots of photos get posted on fb. I would like to see them, but last year the Baltimorians were here over Thanksgiving. In town...with Brenda doing the entertaining...but they plumb wore me out. Now there are three more....so need to settle for photos and fb. I am way beyond doing that kind of traveling.
Brenda has put our many generations old photos in a magical scrolling picture frame..she just updated it so have the new pics there along with a couple really good ones of Barack O. and Joe B. which show what really good friends they are. A nice one of Jimmy Carter and of the Reverend William Barber ll. The Rev. is out there fighting, fighting against the hate spewed by the Repubs. and Jimmy, bless his heart, just keeps going on ..writing, publishing, teaching adult Sunday School class. He is 91 and in remission with brain cancer.
Ohhh, I hear you, Shirlee. Eight of ours (including three grands) just left after spending 6 hours here, and I am utterly spent! Not sure I can make it to midnight without a nap! Ha!
Had an interesting holiday conversation with the father of my kids. At one point kid came in, stood in the doorway for a while, and said, The same conversation you two have been having for 50 years? We both laughed and said: Yep!
When leaving he said: you know, I could win, but you're a better debater. And you have better facts. . . .
What a nice relationship you have with your boys father, Puddle. I am just off the phone with my Saturday night call to my daughter in Cincinnati ......we catch up on family and world news. Nothing but disaster does she see coming from Trump. Yep! Hang on, folks!
I worked very hard at that divorce, Shirlee--I knew they'd only ever have one father, and I made it as easy for him to do that as possible. In return, he never played around with the child support check, nor criticized my mothering.
Beau's having a happy putative birthday. He was about six months when I got him in June 2011, so I back dated and gave him New Year's Day. Hard to believe it's that long. . . .
Yesterday on facebook, my brother-in-law, Scott. . . .

We were engaged 11 days after we met. We were married in the Salt Lake Temple by James E Faust 3 months after the day we met. That was 42 years ago. People say that a good marriage is a lot of hard work but with Paula by my side it has been more of an adventure than hard work. We have been blessed with 10 children who work hard, contribute to society and like to hangout with each other. We have further been blessed with 19 grandchildren that we absolutely adore. During our teens we listened to a song on the radio who's lyrics went like this: 'I love you more today than yesterday, but not as much as tomorrow'... I have found this to be true when it comes to my wonderful wife. Happy anniversary Polly, you are the best!
Thanks, Listener...will do ...as soon as I find out what my account and password are on fb. Brenda has set up my other groups...I could make a guess...but will wait until I see her this week-end.
Gray, gloomy, damp here today. Stay warm ladies ...love to all.
Happy Day after New Year's. I've enjoyed the conversations. Gray and gloomy here too. Tonight we'll watch East of Eden on TV. I'm enjoying old movies on the Turner Classical Movie network.
Tomorrow comes my new phone line. New number same as the old, but 008 instead of 007, lol! It'll be used for the computer, the old will be the people/911 line. Best Christmas present I've ever gotten! AND I'll have long distance. No more cards!! Heaven. Hope the 008 doesn't mess too badly with my earthlink connection manager. . .
Sent Foyle's War off with Harry for a long loan. Working my way back through three years of favs. Have already done Brideshead Revisited, and started Harry Potter last night. DO love that little boy!
Hi, About 5 inches of fluffy white here, cold, 25 degrees or less. We were going to go into Estes Park today to shop, recycle, and stop at the library, but no, decided it was smarter to stay home.
I'm happy for you, Puddle, and hope your new line works well.
Years ago, I taught Film Study at Nederland High. I'm not much of a film buff, but I enjoyed the course very much. I'm thinking that you, Puddle, would have been a great teacher of a course like this.
Well, third day into the new year, and heaven help us with a government controlled by people who seem to have no ethics, no dedication to the common good, no responsibility to the future. I'm praying, please, please, help us to survive this ideological extremism.
Happy Day, Puddle!!!!! Connected to the World...and beyond.
Listener, Ihaven't forgotten your invitation....just dealing with therapist, docs, PA who think he knows it all...etc. Never fear Ihave dealt with PAsinthe past....I have known only one really good one .....willing to do the trained forandassigned job....most others have wanted to pass themselves off as knowing it ALL! Off to Winston-Salem today for a six month check with oral surgeon. I think he is going to be very happy with the results of the weekly massage therapist's work on my neck. I can actually turn my head from far left to far right with only minor pain!
Hi Jo, It's so good to hear from you, so happy you have Internet service. We miss you.
Snow coming down here like a house afire. Yesterday we had about 5 inches; today already 4 and it's expected to snow all night and part of tomorrow. I don't care what anyone says, winter isn't beautiful to me. It's coooold. But, I'm grateful for the fire in the fireplace, hot chocolate, a scarf around my neck, and a headband over my ears.
How are you, Jo? I hope you are feeling good and enjoying life.
Couple of days ago, ordered City of Joy, which I've never seen, just read the book. $6.16. Just now, ordered, The Constant Gardener, which I saw several times with Edwin, and we both loved it. $4.70--new! Going to be odd to see Voldemort as a hero, lol!
Twitter has until January 20th to turn off DT's account, for the sake of national security. If they do not, I am going to delete my account in protest.
Glad to see you back, Jo. Hope life is well and you love your new quarters. I am NOT envying Pat...or anyone else with snow. In this mid-region area the NWS can not decide if we get rain, snow or ice...ora combination this week-end....or maybe nothing. So we play it by the hour. Listener, I would gladly send any snow your way!
Visit with oral surgeon went well, pleased with my swinging head, would like dentist to file a back molar which is catching on the inside of my cheek. I was not surprised at that. Return in six months. I love Winston-Salem ...but am glad downtown Greensboro is home!
Great massage therapist who comes to my apartment weekly.. We will likely need to continue....andworkon inflamed shoulder also.
Brenda has taken over the task of getting a physical therapist for my knees... ...she WILL win that one! No snow yet ...just gray. Maintenance man for the building says he thinks it will be a "soft snow"(!). Back to reality I think that means slushy and if it freezes...ice!
Happy day all.....enjoy our last few weeks with the Obamas in the White House.y
In the event, it was hardly more than a skiff. And mostly gone now. Blown away, I assume since it's clearly too cold to melt, at all. All my heaters functioning just now, there's that blessing.
After a several day struggle with my DVD, finally ran the lens cleaner, many times, and it's working again. Had to skip Half Blood Prince the first time, came back to it, watching now.
Think I'm going to do West Wing after this.
Right now, 'cept for morning knee pain, not much pain in my life at all. Been using my Emu oil on the knees and they're improving. Magical stuff that. Gotta order a bigger bottle this time around, lol! It has no substitutes!
What I wanna know is: given the now-confirmed Russian interference in our election, why are we going forward with the Inauguration? Wouldn't that mean "it worked" and encourage more of the same?
DT says the CIA is wrong and Russia is fine. Does anyone else feel that to be a form of treason?
I just sent this to my Rep and Senators in Congress:
What I need to know is, given the now-confirmed Russian interference in our election, why are we going forward with the Inauguration? Wouldn't that mean "it worked" and encourage more of the same?
The President-elect says that the CIA is wrong and Russia is fine. How is that not a form of treason?
I am not asking rhetorically and I am not just blowing off steam. I am truly concerned about this and need some way to comprehend why the Inauguration isn't being stopped.
I think the problem is that we have no "plans" about what to do in such a situation. Those wronged are out of power. Those in power have no desire to change the outcome.
Charlie Grapski is having a meltdown of some sort for reasons that I know wot of. Hope he heals soon.
Close to TWENTY inches of snow by this evening when it should taper off. We got your share, Puddle.
Keith Olbermann has a video.made for Trump Voters.... Our Puddle was ahead of the curve .....KO is saying Trump is NOT riight/ well. I can never make a link or I would put it up .... predicts he will do something so dangerous that the Republicans will have no option.
All of GSO is hunkered down...staying inside....only moving things are city trucks trying to keep the main streets open, emergency vehicles ..and the trains!
It is amazing what shows up...Brenda has been ordering quite a number of supplies for me on Amazon...and yep, next up is something they think I might want/need!
Sun is shining here now....but we have enough snow and ice remaining that all the churches in GSO have cancelled services. Even Brenda who grew up in Michigan and has driven in her share of nasty weather is staying in today.
Over a foot of snow and below zero weather for a few days, but today, 50 degrees, sun, cirrus and stratus clouds, and flax blue skies. Very welcome.
We watched The Black Night, a film with Jet Li and Jackie Chan. The story was a young boy was supposed to retrieve and bring back the Monkey King's staff. The boy lives in an American city, is attacked by four ruffians and knocked out. Somehow he's in China rebelling against an evil king. He learns Kung Fu, they fight, and he gives the Monkey King his staff. Then he returns home and defeats the ruffians and meets a girl who resembles the girl in China who saved him and who died. It was terrific.
I'm distressed with what's happening with Trump and company. We've never lived under a tyranny before. I just don't know what's going to happen
Whoops. The title of the movie was The Forbidden Kingdom. The Black Knight was another movie we watched, and this was set in Medieval times. Two fun movies.

Christmas Morning Looking Out at Storm Mountain
Oh rest, Sweet Buddha
along the top of the mountain
as if peace were possible
and we might dream
of stars and translucent skies
that life was forever a grace
beautiful and full
and love was never lost.
There was this morning
angels!
What are angels
anyway?
Just feathers
and sky
and beauty
and hope.
Thank you, Puddle for your beautiful poetry, the new tread...and just being you!
Brenda was here last evening ..and we will continue our celebration. I am not
sure what is on the menu......but it will all be good!
Merry Christmas to all .....have a happy, happy day!
Love you all ......
Won't take credit for Pat's lovely poem, above, but will for the new thread, and for being me, lol!
Turkey *almost done*--whew.
Wonderfully quiet day: just perfect for an introvert, grin.

Thank you Puddle ...for Howard Zinn's words...
Brenda and I had a fine, long week-end beginning
on Friday evening and ending Sunday evening.
That girl is an expert on making the most of the best!
Love to all.

I have lived random days
Waking before dawn
Uncommitted to lists
Ignoring domestic tasks
Walking through a meadow
A kind of maze
Not caring about anything
Just pausing and looking.

Know such ambiance.
Even the leaves on trees
Seem to shake for a reason.
Lovely, Pat! Thank you!

Ring Out, Wild Bells
by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more,
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.
Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.
Ring out the want, the care the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease,
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.
Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.

I don't care what anyone says, winter isn't beautiful to me. It's coooold. But, I'm grateful for the fire in the fireplace, hot chocolate, a scarf around my neck, and a headband over my ears.
How are you, Jo? I hope you are feeling good and enjoying life.
Love to you.
Someone please tell the snow gods that they're supposed to be dropping the white stuff at my house, not Pat's!!!
I'm utterly tickled that puddle and Jo both got internet (and just a day apart!!). We are restored!!!
Thanks, Shirlee! ♥
Yay for a full house!
Agree with deleting Twitter account! Good idea.
Much love to bloggie family!
Glad to see you back, Jo. Hope life is well and you love your new quarters.
I am NOT envying Pat...or anyone else with snow. In this mid-region area
the NWS can not decide if we get rain, snow or ice...ora combination this
week-end....or maybe nothing. So we play it by the hour. Listener, I would
gladly send any snow your way!
Visit with oral surgeon went well, pleased with my swinging head, would like
dentist to file a back molar which is catching on the inside of my cheek. I was
not surprised at that. Return in six months. I love Winston-Salem ...but am
glad downtown Greensboro is home!
Love to all.
All snowy and coooooooooooold!
Shirlee, so glad about the turning head--that one's a real pain in the neck. . . .
Great massage therapist who comes to my apartment weekly..
We will likely need to continue....andworkon inflamed shoulder also.
Brenda has taken over the task of getting a physical therapist for my knees...
...she WILL win that one! No snow yet ...just gray. Maintenance man for the
building says he thinks it will be a "soft snow"(!). Back to reality I think that
means slushy and if it freezes...ice!
Happy day all.....enjoy our last few weeks with the Obamas in the
White House.y
Well, puddle, with all the DVDs you play, I can see why your machine would want a little spa time. π
Troo dat, listener! :)
Well, the Founders' plan was to have an Electoral College which, in its wisdom, would never permit an unfit person to be elected. Heh.
Close to TWENTY inches of snow by this evening when it should taper off.
We got your share, Puddle.
Keith Olbermann has a video.made for Trump Voters....
Our Puddle was ahead of the curve .....KO is saying
Trump is NOT riight/ well. I can never make a link
or I would put it up .... predicts he will do something
so dangerous that the Republicans will have no option.
All of GSO is hunkered down...staying inside....only
moving things are city trucks trying to keep the main
streets open, emergency vehicles ..and the trains!
Love to all...stay warm, etc!
Wonder what I've ever done, looked at, researched that has made Amazon wonder if I might be interested in learning to play the ukulele? Mystery, lol!
Bit more snow, maybe two inches in all. Cold as a welldigger's watch.
It is amazing what shows up...Brenda has been ordering quite a number
of supplies for me on Amazon...and yep, next up is something they think
I might want/need!
Sun is shining here now....but we have enough snow and ice remaining
that all the churches in GSO have cancelled services. Even Brenda
who grew up in Michigan and has driven in her share of nasty weather
is staying in today.
Stay warm, safe etc.
Love to all.
HI friends,
Over a foot of snow and below zero weather for a few days, but today, 50 degrees, sun, cirrus and stratus clouds, and flax blue skies.
Meanwhile, be well, be strong.
Whoops. The title of the movie was The Forbidden Kingdom. The Black Knight was another movie we watched, and this was set in Medieval times. Two fun movies.
Pat, I'm so glad you got some respite from the weather at last!!
The movie sounds interesting. I wonder where we'll all end up after the nightmare of DT begins!
I still believe this Inauguration should be stopped!
We didn't get any snow up here while the southern coastal New England got clobbered. Someone is holding the weather map upside-down again.
puddle. Any more news on poor Charile?
He seems a bit quieter today. I don't know what he thinks he's gaining. And his premise makes no sense to me in any case.
-2ΒΊ when I let Beau out at midnight. Warming, such as it is, starts tomorrow. Yay!
New thread!
