lovely! Barb it's so funny, the links aren't live here but in the notification email that I got they were live! weird old blog, LOL!

this is so beautiful and then I see on the news about that animal killer chick who shot a giraffe - she says it's to raise awareness and feed a village but I call it murder. shameful.

whitznd said...

Yes, there are two different women doing that. Makes me sick. The one with the lady laying next to the neck of the giraffe I saw the day after I saw the birth. Powerful negative impact on me for sure!

Anyway, the live cam and the highlights are terrific.

Much going on politically tonight. getting ready to resign the board and hand off the Demogram.

XOXOXOXO

Modestly warm/cool sunny/cloudy day. Perfect non-winter!!!

SUCH a day! Had to run errands, change three appointments and move mountains. I also raked the gardens awake and found LOTS coming up! We still have some snow and ice in the back part of the yard, but it won't last much longer.

The latest news from the Library is that another staffer has resigned! The young woman who joined the staff as Program Director about two years ago decided she'd had all the fun she could stand. I hear the Head Clerk is worse than ever…! I am SO glad I trusted my gut and got out of there.

Good for you, Barb!! So excited for you!

I love giraffes! Thanks for the sweet post and links!

Thanks for making my links live, Puddle. Much appreciated.

XOXO to all. off to my thyroid dr this am.

Hi Y'All,

About two feet of snow here, heaps sliding off our metal roof, stacked on the ground 3 and 4 feet high. Now, melting, though more snow and rain predicted tonight and tomorrow.

Ah, springtime in the Rockies!

Still recovering from tiredness. We won't drive like that again. Maybe 4 or 5 hours a day, but not 9 or more.

Not much news. We're going to snack it tonight, about out of dinner type food. Maybe tomorrow we'll go into Loveland to shop. The roads are plowed. Our driveway is another thing.

We loved the South. The courteousness, the awareness of people, the soft air, the flowers, the magnificent oak, beech, magnolia trees, so appealing after a long winter.

Take good care of yourselves.

Today was yet another sunny day in the 60's! It's the last we'll see of such weather for at least a week. Some sun is expected on Sunday (how apropos), but it will be cooler, and by this time next week we'll have a bit of snow at night. Oh well. I do hope the weather pattern improves by the 26th as the whole family is coming for Bill's 60th birthday and it will be ON Grandson's 2nd birthday.

It has been a tough winter--but here in NC we are well into spring. Trees have gotten leaves as well as shedding pollen! Some early flowering shrubs are blooming!

Dear Friends,

Another cold, gray, gloomy day with not much melting.

I wanted to tell you that I learned from a friend of Judy Maxon in Portland, Oregon, that Judy passed away on March 8th. Her last months and maybe years were very hard.

She learned that she had bone cancer after a fall on her front porch breaking her wrist and injuring her back. According to her friend, she denied it, was furious, and became ever more abusive and harsh, alienating everyone.

She had brain cancer too, dementia, and was in great pain. I wondered in our time together on the blog how she had become so provocative and mean. That wasn't the Judy I knew for nearly 50 years, but there seemed to be no ameliorating it.

Her friend is putting on a Memorial Milonga tonight for her, has stuck by her at the hardest of times. I've often thought that I haven't really learned to "turn the other cheek" even now in my 70s, but this will be instructive.

I know we all felt the provocations and verbal insults, but that may have been from the brain cancer and also from the dysfunction she may have known as a child.

May she rest in peace, dance among the planets and stars, know that we are sorry for her pain and forgive the anger she brought.

I thought that you would like to know.

Jo_in_Vermont said...

thank you Pat, I too wondered at the meanness that came forth on the blog, I hope her soul will rest in peace now.

Pat, thanks for the heads' up. I was concerned that something had happened when she didn't come back. I'm glad she's finally found peace. No question that she coped with more than most.

There is more on heaven and earth than we imagine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lydia_Fairchild

I've wondered, more and more often, as I've aged, how much actual choice any of us have.

On my dating site, I encounter a number of what I feel are fairly unhinged people, rePublicans, trying to explain a world philosophy that sets me teeth on edge. There is so MUCH hate and disdain for people not making as much money as they do that it's nothing short of breath taking. It extends to those who believe that we as a culture should take care of those people. And yet, clearly, they believe themselves to be quite nice people.

Lydia Fairchild lives with another woman inside her. And functions perfectly normally. And yet is so not normal. . . .

Shirlee Murphy said...

Wow, Puddle...very strange. Wonder if the number of these 2DNA people is increasing. Seems likely!

I've been away for two days at Squam Lake (of On Golden Pond fame) in NH. This was a peer retreat and meeting. It was very good to be there and I will say more about it after I have slept. Related photos at some point, too.

While I was there, son Shiloh (the wildlife biologist) ran the Boston Marathon in just under 3 hours!! It's his best personal time, too, so he's very happy. Amazing, really, as it was in the 40's, raining, with a 15-20kt headwind!!

May live in a Sea of happiness in the hereafter. I'm so sorry to learn of this. I wondered why she didn't come back as she seemed not to be affected by our disdain of her ideas.

Thank you, Pat, for the news. Disquieting as it may be.

Love to all of you...

puddle said...

Sunny, cool, bight spring day. River down to 90% of culverts, and the tornado watch produced some high winds and rain some 60 miles to the east, so all's good.

Just finished the whole series of Upstairs, Downstairs, and am starting on The West Wing, where I'm still in the first year.

Shirlee Murphy said...

Thanks for checking the weather, Listener. No tornado,
some rain the past few days. This is such a comfortable
climate we may get a small one every ten years or so.
Nothing like Michigan where tornados and their warnings
and watches are a rite of spring. At the university we
needed to get all students to the basement for any warnings. Of course, spring is tornado time AND end of winter quarter time. Students were studying for tests and finishing up papers. They did NOT want to
leave their work and head for the basement level.
Bit of a tough job to make them leave--the art library
was on the third floor--sow we all trekked doe the steps.

Ooohhhh, I had not seen your post about Judy, Pat, until Barb commented on it. I am truly sad that Judy's last years were so harsh that she couldn't face it and turned it outward. I guess it's true that meanness is often a cry for help. I think I can honestly say that there were no bad words between us. She even wrote me a note once thanking me for always having been kind to her. I did not like the way she treated my friends, and wished she would practice tempering the expression of her views. I never really did understand the strength of the group anger toward her, since the usual thing to do with people being trollish is ignore. The few times I tried to suggest that two wrongs don't make a right, it was impressed upon me that some people really do need to be put in their place. That may be true. I'm still not sure how it's done well. But it was true that in her last years Judy was much harder to converse with. Oh that we had simply known the why of it! Yet I do recall that even gentle and sweet tc didn't like to be "pitied" for her struggle with cancer. This is exactly the sort of struggle I hope to never have to deal with, exactly because of the fear that I would become embittered by it. I suppose there is no such thing as too much honing of one's inner life…! Thanks for letting us know, Pat. I join you all in feeling sad that it couldn't have been different for Judy, especially in how she related to people. You all please tell us if the road gets hard, okay?! ♥

listener said...

PS: Please be gentle with yourself, Pat. You didn't know. Judy's resistance to being open is ultimately what caused the friction.

Pat said...

Dear Listener,

Thank you for you thoughtful and kind words. I wish I had been able to help Judy. She was creative, passionate, bold, and in so many ways inspiring in her art, dance, ideas, and travel. I'm grateful for her friendship and presence in my life. I wish I had been a bigger hearted friend, kinder, and willing to put aside hurtful remarks.

She is in my prayers and thoughts, and in her passing she has given me an important lesson, to continue to love, to be kind, and to detach from personal attack. I hope I can do it. I will try.

Thank you.

listener said...

Pat, you are one of the most compassionate persons I have been privileged to know. Your desire to to continue to love, to be kind, and to detach from personal attack is wise, and will star you in good stead. That you will do this to honour Judy will serve to heal the brokenness, since just as in doing this you are forgiving Judy, you are also able to forgive yourself anything that feels amiss to you. To allow someone's spirit to leave in all freedom, we need to be sure we are forgiving ourselves as well as them.

There is a scene in the movie Master and Commander (have you seen it?) in which the ship is in the doldrums and someone blames the bad luck on there being a "Jonah" on board, and insinuates someone in particular. People start treating the man so poorly that he begins to believe it himself. So he picks up a cannonball and jumps off the ship, committing suicide. What follows is the usual memorial service aboard ship, in which the Captain reads a word of scripture and prays that the young man be forgiven and that they be forgiven any ill will they had toward him. Immediately the ship's sails fill with wind.

Whoooo! Grandson, who turns two on Sunday, was taken to the hospital today by ambulance when he woke up from his nap croupy, barfing and struggling to breathe!!! So scary!! They used a Nebulizer to give medicine and steroids and he's doing a bit better now. =Whew!= They're going to watch him for a few hours, then let him go home. I'm betting Mom & Dad won't get much sleep tonight. And, to think, he took his nap here on Saturday while his parents house hunted.

Pat said...

That's so scary, so panicking. Somehow we've survived as parents and so have our kids. But, as grandparents, when the grandchildren are in jeopardy, that's heart stopping. Glad the little one is doing okay.

Gray, rainy day here. This is the dismal time of year, before the green, the wildflowers. Everything looks dirty and bereft, but oh, when the green comes, it's worth it.

Jo_in_Vermont said...

oh listener that is scary! hope the babe will be okay - and his parents and grandparents! news like that can be so stressful! xo

Shirlee Murphy said...

Listener, hope all will be well with your little one--and
that the docs can determine what precipitated the attack.

puddle said...

My first was croupy. Many nights huddled over a bathtub with hot water running. Second, not once. But scary as hell when it happens. And the croupy one grew up to be the athlete (scuba, rock climbing. . . ).

listener said...

Thank-you. ♥

Grandson got home around dinnertime and was subdued but very glad to be home. My D-I-L said that it was the first time she ever heard her RN Mom of 40 years say, "Call an ambulance"! Talk about scary!

It's croup and they say it may be he came in contact with an older child who carried an illness that causes it, but who was symptomless.

puddle, thanks for that good thought about the future. Love you for that!!

listener said...

PS: puddle, I just sent your note to Son and D-I-L, as I thought that might be a good thought for them at the end of the day…especially with their second due in October. :-)

Jo_in_Vermont said...

listener I am so glad that he is okay. the docs probably told his folks this, but if that ever happens again they can take him into the bathroom, close the door and turn the shower on very hot - the steam will help him clear his throat and lungs. I remember having to do this a few times when my sons were young and it is very scary but this does bring relief very quickly.

listener said...

Jo…yes. Grandson's Dad had it too.

Apparently this attack was especially bad and he was gasping for breath and needed oxygen. Lucky thing that Nana happens to have Wednesdays off and was home!

listener said...

Grandson is back in the hospital. Home last night, but back tonight for an overnight. It's severe croup, though he's a little better the last hour. His parents are exhausted. Prayers and vibes appreciated. ♡ XOXOXXX

So sorry to hear about your grandson, Listener. Hope this passes soon.

grueling day with the CPA. On the phone for 2 hours while he went over journal entries. funny, he told me to write a check from one of our companies to the other, so I did, and to day he said that it should have been the other way around. stressful for sure. And about a half hour later, he sorta mumbled that he might have misspoke. HAH! I do as I'm told when the CPA is giving instructions, thank you very much!

Anyway, much love and light to all my wonderful blog family. going to bed early tonight to recoup from today. XOXOXO

listener said...

Thanks, Barb. ♥

Sounds like CPAs put their pants on one leg at a time. ;-)

The docs are testing to determine the specific virus (or whatever) causing the croup.

Love to all!!!!

listener said...

Thanks for all the sweetnesses, all! ♠
Some day. Grandson became so freaked by being at the hospital that they had to up and leave there in the middle of the night! Being freaked only increases coughing and inability to breathe and it got to the point where it was healthier for him to NOT be at the hospital. Smart kiddo, really, but he also really needed to be watched and tended, as he could not breathe so well and was alternately coughing and screaming. How many hours in a row can any parent tend a child who is struggling to breathe, and while not getting any sleep themselves? Whooo! So today they took Grandson to the pediatrician again, and got another steroid shot to decrease the inflammation. Magic! He has been much better ever since!! What a relief! I wonder why they didn't think to give him another steroid shot before he left the hospital. Anyway, all's well that ends well! I hope he's out of the woods for good now!

Good Morning,

Glad little one is stabilized.

Supposed to rain today, tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday, and by Wednesday some dry weather and sunshine.

Yesterday, I discovered about 8 pasque flowers in our meadow. So, here's a poem, which I apologize if I've already posted it another time.

Have a nice Saturday.

Reminder

A startle of blue
on my pine woods
walk, a squawk
from the unmelodious
Stellar Jay reminding
me I'm an intruder
as I search for
Pasque flowers
to photograph,
harbingers of
returning moisture
and light in this
uncertain spring,
yesterday summer,
today brings snow.

Over there pushing
through twigs,
needles and duff,
lavender petals
like birds beaks
reaching up.

Pat? Is it possible that your Facebook account has been hacked? I just got a request from "you" to be friends. . . . Have you resigned recently and restarted? Other than that, the only time this has happened has been when friends' accounts were hacked.

Jo_in_Vermont said...

I just got a request from her as well.

Yes, I've been hacked. Denise and a friend, Todd, informed me. Defriend me. I've changed my password, so it shouldn't happen right now. I'll get back to you.

It's that old money scam, you've won a million dollars, etc. I think it happens because I signed petitions. I'll be more careful.

The hacker has some xxs in his name. A friend from Florida also called to tell me. She knew it wasn't me because of the bad grammar. Guess there's some value in being an English major.

Take care. Thanks for informing me.

Shirlee Murphy said...

Lots of value in being an English major! ??? Were they

One last steroid shot, yesterday, made all the difference. Alleluia!! Grandson slept 11 hours straight last night and today was eating and talking again. =WHEW!!=

Today our birthday parcel arrived for Grandson (after first being sent to the wrong town ~ same first initial and one digit difference in zip code ~ but correct on the address label!!). He got to open it and discover his own Fisher Price barn with animals, people and accessories. :-) He exclaimed "Oh! It's a farm!" and was inseparable from it from then on! :-D It was so sweet to see the video and some stills of him enjoying it all! So wonderful that he is eating and talking again! You will have to imagine my relief; some things just cannot be put into words.

He turns 2 tomorrow (Sunday). :-)

Pat, I did not receive an errant message from you, via FB or email or anything. I suppose that's because my email address on the FB site reads "donotemail…" as all one word in front of the usual. Robo wouldn't work that way.

I am super exhausted but just about ready for the family to arrive tomorrow and celebrate Bill's 60th and Grandson's 2nd. I even got a balloon with one's name and age on one side and the others' on the other side. :-)

Off to sleeeeeeeeeeep!! :-D

Jo_in_Vermont said...

the cloned fb account said 'friends since April, so was easy to see as a fraud but the weird thing was that when I accepted the friend request it brought me to Pat's real account with all of her photos and posts. I didn't see the other account until I searched for it later and lo and behold we were 'friends'. weird.

I don't actually think Pat's account was hacked. I think it was *copied*-

This is her URL: https://www.facebook.com/pat.maslowski.7?ref=br_rs

This is the copy: https://www.facebook.com/okiki.olatoye?fref=jewel

The copy is befriending, one at a time her friends. I never got a message, just a friend offer. The copy only has one picture, and one entry.

The why remains a mystery to me.

[Tried to post this last night; thought it went through, but here it was when I signed on just now, lol!]

Jo, when I got the request, it said we had one mutual friend, and since I knew we had many more than that, I clicked on the name in the request box, and got the fake account. Took me a while to get to her real account. (Facebook loads so slowly, it took an hour to get my own friends up.) You, BTW, were the one mutual friend, lol!

Just checked: the cloned page has been taken down.

Pat said...

Hi Friends,

Puddle, you are amazing in your research and discovery. Wow. Thank you. That makes sense, and I'm glad the copy was taken down.

When I first registered for Facebook it was because David had hundreds of photos of Ta'u Island and Tutuilia Island. So many of our former students are now in the U.S. and we wanted them to have access to these photos. I hadn't planned to actually be on Facebook, but over the years I've come to enjoy it.

Again, thank you so much for your research. You are indeed a most eloquent nerd and poet and storyteller.

Rainy here, rain, rain, rain, but gradually the brown is turning green. The bears are back. The composter was knocked down, but they didn't get into it.

We watched the White House Correspondents Dinner, and Obama still just shines with his intelligence and wit. We also watched The Wind, a 1928 silent film with Lilian Gish. It was amazing to see how much body language, facial expression, and gestures communicated. It was on the Turner Classic Film network.

Well, again, thank you all for being concerned about the hacking.
