I'm getting deck. The Trex boards were loose, and when my friend, the builder opened the aluminum base, the timbers were rotted. They worked all day today. It would have been dangerous had I not decided to do something. So, I"ll have a new deck in about a week or so.

Another hot day today. I've listened less and less to the news. It's just too awful, the pettiness, the disorganization, the lack of skill, knowledge and maturity, but we all know this.
The work on the deck goes on. It could have collapses, so I'm glad it's being repaired. I called our insurance company to see if they would pay for it, and of course, they won't. They don't cover rot, mold, and degeneration. I'm not real happy with our insurance company, so will wait til my son does some research on others.

My only visit to Alaska was the year they got statehood. My mother's sister sold her house in SLC (she had several in the states--each place she had a child living) when her daughter and son-in-law moved to NJ. She bought a 3/4 ton truck and drove up with me riding shotgun. She'd been driving the Al-Can Highway since the 40's when she met and married my Uncle Harry, the fourth of Alaska's first Supreme Court Justices. Appointment for next week for cat scans and meeting with the doc. It is much smaller and less serious than the prior surgery on my tongue and lymph nodes. Not looking forward to it .. but Brenda says I will be recovering at her house. Gladly...... take care all....

VT*Grandson (age 4) went sailing for the first time on Sunday, with his Dad (our Youngest) and his Grandad (Bill). It was blowing about 15mph, so there were some whitecaps and they had to reef the sail. And that little chap had a fabulous time!! He was laughing and enjoying it tremendously. The photos are adorable!! Well over an hour later, when his Daddy asked if he was ready to go back to land, Grandson replied, "Yah, I'm getting tired of being scared." LOL!! But, oh, he's a natural! They'll have him racing before you know it.

I attended a poetry workshop on Saturday at the Loveland Library. Rosemary Wahtola Trommer directed it, and she was wonderful. She is the poet laureate on the Western Slope of Colorado. I felt so encouraged, so happy with her presentation that the rest of the day felt like dancing or skating.
If interested here is a 20 minute Ted talk she gave on "Changing Metaphors". She included much of this in the workshop.
Evidently, if one takes 10 mg of melatonin and goes to bed at five, it's possible to turn off an alarm clock at 8:30, and retain NO memory of it's happening at all. I've never done that in my life. I usually wake about 3 minutes before it's due to go off. Today, my medical peeps woke Beau, who woke me. right at ten, as scheduled. Nice visit. Will hear about blood work later.

Pat, what a great thing to hear a Poet Laureate and feel like dancing the rest of the day! Even better that she inspired you to be more gentle with yourself. Wonderful. I will take a leaf from what you say and not fret about getting the closet all cleaned out. I will give it a good effort again when the weather cools in September but no longer imagine having it all done before the snow flies. My chief reason for wanting it done was to give myself permission to use my treadle sewing machine (which is right outside the closet door) and to get out my oil paints again (also done in that room). But if I have to learn how to do it in smaller bursts, for the same of creativity and sanity, so be it.
The lesson of my life this season has been PACE. I need to go at a slower pace than before. Not because of physical constraints but of the sake of spiritual awareness. It was finally brought into my full consciousness week before last when, for the first time in more than 41 years, I got stopped for speeding...! I'd never been stopped at all in over 4 decades!! It was a shock that it happened and the truth is that I totally deserved it. I was going 17mph over the speed limit, and had just gone around a car that was tuning into a driveway...crossing the double solid yellow line to do so, and getting back into my lane as another car came over a hill. All in front of the officer. And where was I headed? To offer spiritual guidance. (You are permitted to laugh!) The officer was VERY nice. He reminded me of my jolly Uncle Walter. He said "Why are you nervous? I'm not mad at you." Ha! I wasn't nervous, actually, I was dismayed that I had allowed myself to drive like that! And he was absolutely spot on when he said, "You weren't paying attention." It's true (and absurd given that I help others discover how to pay attention!). I didn't have the radio on, wasn't on the phone, wasn't texting, wasn't doing anything except driving. But...it was a beautifully clear day and I had never seen the landscape so very open before! On a hill, I could see the ski trails in the mountains on the New York side of Lake Champlain. I could see "extra" mountains in the Vermont landscape that are more often hidden by haze or cloud. I was very happy and admiring the beauty of the world around me...and I forgot to watch my speedometer. Distracted by beauty. Sigh. He was so kind, though, and when he found that I hadn't been stopped in over 41 years (just one time previous, in NH, when our eldest was a newborn and by tending his crying I had missed that the speed limit had changed), he gave me a vastly reduced ticket fee. A warning might have been nice. But truly, I deserved it. He may have saved my life.
Pace. I need to attend to the pace of life. For me, living at a gentle pace IS prayer. 🐢
I meant to add that this officer chuckled as he said the hard things. It wasn't in derision, but just laughing that I hadn't even noticed him behind me. He was like a koan: both stopping me in my tracks AND making me grin over it afterward. I have not been kicking myself or doing the "what ifs" about this at all. I am reminded of the sort of soul that my friend Jerry May had. Jerry would have said, "Always, we begin again." So I pick myself up and begin again. And in two years of beginning again, I will no longer have 2 points on my license. 🚗

He told me I was going over the speed limit, and I responded in surprise, as you did. I told him that we'd just bought this car and I was enjoying the ride. He gave me a warning, and said his name was Officer Friendly. Your story reminded me of this, and I'm laughing.

As regards guidance, my own meeting for guidance was to be today, but my Guide and I chose to postpone, as she JUST got home from 5 weeks with family, as her father died (pancreatic cancer...diagnosed last December). I wanted to give her some time to just BE and get her bearings. She was most grateful. We'll pick up again in September. But now that I think of it, it's a little ironic that my own meeting got postponed. LOL!
I just got home from buying some purple flowers in pots. Today would have been grandniece Jillian's 17th birthday. Extended family is gathering on Saturday at Jillian's family's home to Celebrate Jillian. She was struck by the car right out in front of the house, so that will be a little emotional for everyone. But I sense that her mother is moving from sorrowful grief to cherishing happy memories. So we will be bringing a deep purple flower that the bees seem to love, which is in flower now, as well as Autumn Joy Sedum which has just the first hint of turning from green to pale pink. It will continue to turning darken into a deep purple by October. So I know it will be purple on September 20th when the anniversary of Jillian's official death occurs each year. When Jillian's mom's father died (pancreatic cancer too), we gave the family bulbs to make a memorial garden. So this is the first of the flowers for a Jillian Memorial Garden. Her favourite colour was purple.
I'm watching the round moon rise. A few nights ago I was outside photographing it, and saw a meteor, even then, so far ahead of the official days of Perseid! That got me thinking of a poem I love, which I'll share here.
THE MOON'S JOURNEY
Last night the moon silver-white, translucent racing through the clouds, illuminated, outlined by night as if shot from some projectile device speeding to a destination through and beyond the sky.
I read in the newspaper the moon is shrinking and wondered what future generations would see. Now, the size of a soccer ball, maybe then a baseball, a ping pong ball?
I told myself, it's the clouds that are moving, but no the moon passed through one cloud then another, the shapes of clouds not changing, it was the moon.
I took my camera out of its case and by the time I had it in my hand, the moon had disappeared.

Thanks for all your good wishes...but it seems Iwillhave to have thistle hingsurgically removed. It is not invading lymph nodes, but will continue to grow. Other option would be I plan to radiation every day for a time. Not willing to do that! Just take the knife and get it over. One or two nights in hospital and then to Brenda's neat house for recovery. Surgery scheduled for the 31st.
Not to worry....in good hands all around! I plan to be around longe than Trump!

Shirlee, I have a daughter who is quite the organiser too! (She had four brothers and my DH would say, "We have four sons and a sister for each of them." LOL! She is a Partner with Accenture. Aren't these young women amazing people?

VT*Grandson (age 4) went sailing for the first time on Sunday, with his Dad (our Youngest) and his Grandad (Bill). It was blowing about 15mph, so there were some whitecaps and they had to reef the sail. And that little chap had a fabulous time!! He was laughing and enjoying it tremendously. The photos are adorable!! Well over an hour later, when his Daddy asked if he was ready to go back to land, Grandson replied, "Yah, I'm getting tired of being scared." LOL!! But, oh, he's a natural! They'll have him racing before you know it.
Good Morning, a wet, rainy, cool, soggy, overcast morning.
I attended a poetry workshop on Saturday at the Loveland Library. Rosemary Wahtola Trommer directed it, and she was wonderful. She is the poet laureate on the Western Slope of Colorado. I felt so encouraged, so happy with her presentation that the rest of the day felt like dancing or skating.

She used changing metaphors to change our lives, and it was fun, interesting, and we all felt so creative.
Evidently, if one takes 10 mg of melatonin and goes to bed at five, it's possible to turn off an alarm clock at 8:30, and retain NO memory of it's happening at all. I've never done that in my life. I usually wake about 3 minutes before it's due to go off. Today, my medical peeps woke Beau, who woke me. right at ten, as scheduled. Nice visit. Will hear about blood work later.
Good sleep, good medical peeps, good dog....have to be good results!

Pat, what a great thing to hear a Poet Laureate and feel like dancing the rest of the day! Even better that she inspired you to be more gentle with yourself. Wonderful. I will take a leaf from what you say and not fret about getting the closet all cleaned out. I will give it a good effort again when the weather cools in September but no longer imagine having it all done before the snow flies. My chief reason for wanting it done was to give myself permission to use my treadle sewing machine (which is right outside the closet door) and to get out my oil paints again (also done in that room). But if I have to learn how to do it in smaller bursts, for the same of creativity and sanity, so be it.
The lesson of my life this season has been PACE. I need to go at a slower pace than before. Not because of physical constraints but of the sake of spiritual awareness. It was finally brought into my full consciousness week before last when, for the first time in more than 41 years, I got stopped for speeding...! I'd never been stopped at all in over 4 decades!! It was a shock that it happened and the truth is that I totally deserved it. I was going 17mph over the speed limit, and had just gone around a car that was tuning into a driveway...crossing the double solid yellow line to do so, and getting back into my lane as another car came over a hill. All in front of the officer. And where was I headed? To offer spiritual guidance. (You are permitted to laugh!) The officer was VERY nice. He reminded me of my jolly Uncle Walter. He said "Why are you nervous? I'm not mad at you." Ha! I wasn't nervous, actually, I was dismayed that I had allowed myself to drive like that! And he was absolutely spot on when he said, "You weren't paying attention." It's true (and absurd given that I help others discover how to pay attention!). I didn't have the radio on, wasn't on the phone, wasn't texting, wasn't doing anything except driving. But...it was a beautifully clear day and I had never seen the landscape so very open before! On a hill, I could see the ski trails in the mountains on the New York side of Lake Champlain. I could see "extra" mountains in the Vermont landscape that are more often hidden by haze or cloud. I was very happy and admiring the beauty of the world around me...and I forgot to watch my speedometer. Distracted by beauty. Sigh. He was so kind, though, and when he found that I hadn't been stopped in over 41 years (just one time previous, in NH, when our eldest was a newborn and by tending his crying I had missed that the speed limit had changed), he gave me a vastly reduced ticket fee. A warning might have been nice. But truly, I deserved it. He may have saved my life.
Pace. I need to attend to the pace of life. For me, living at a gentle pace IS prayer. 🐢

I meant to add that this officer chuckled as he said the hard things. It wasn't in derision, but just laughing that I hadn't even noticed him behind me. He was like a koan: both stopping me in my tracks AND making me grin over it afterward. I have not been kicking myself or doing the "what ifs" about this at all. I am reminded of the sort of soul that my friend Jerry May had. Jerry would have said, "Always, we begin again." So I pick myself up and begin again. And in two years of beginning again, I will no longer have 2 points on my license. 🚗

I enjoyed your story, well told, and it reminded me of when we bought a Nissan Maxima, and I was enjoying the ride, the scenery, the exhilaration, when I was pulled over by a policeman. He told me I was going over the speed limit, and I responded in surprise, as you did. I told him that we'd just bought this car and I was enjoying the ride. He gave me a warning, and said his name was Officer Friendly. Your story reminded me of this, and I'm laughing.
Yes, pacing. I'm learning that also. Thank you for such a warm, practical, and giving post. I felt like we were having a conversation, and it was comforting. Giving guidance is such a needed gift, and it does change our lives.

As regards guidance, my own meeting for guidance was to be today, but my Guide and I chose to postpone, as she JUST got home from 5 weeks with family, as her father died (pancreatic cancer...diagnosed last December). I wanted to give her some time to just BE and get her bearings. She was most grateful. We'll pick up again in September. But now that I think of it, it's a little ironic that my own meeting got postponed. LOL!

I just got home from buying some purple flowers in pots. Today would have been grandniece Jillian's 17th birthday. Extended family is gathering on Saturday at Jillian's family's home to Celebrate Jillian. She was struck by the car right out in front of the house, so that will be a little emotional for everyone. But I sense that her mother is moving from sorrowful grief to cherishing happy memories. So we will be bringing a deep purple flower that the bees seem to love, which is in flower now, as well as Autumn Joy Sedum which has just the first hint of turning from green to pale pink. It will continue to turning darken into a deep purple by October. So I know it will be purple on September 20th when the anniversary of Jillian's official death occurs each year. When Jillian's mom's father died (pancreatic cancer too), we gave the family bulbs to make a memorial garden. So this is the first of the flowers for a Jillian Memorial Garden. Her favourite colour was purple.

I'm watching the round moon rise. A few nights ago I was outside photographing it, and saw a meteor, even then, so far ahead of the official days of Perseid! That got me thinking of a poem I love, which I'll share here.
THE MOON'S JOURNEY
Last night the moon
silver-white, translucent
racing through the clouds,
illuminated, outlined
by night as if shot from
some projectile device
speeding to a destination
through and beyond the sky.
I read in the newspaper
the moon is shrinking and
wondered what future generations
would see. Now, the size of
a soccer ball, maybe then
a baseball, a ping pong ball?
I told myself, it's the clouds
that are moving, but no the moon
passed through one cloud
then another, the shapes of clouds
not changing, it was the moon.
I took my camera out of its case
and by the time I had it in my hand,
the moon had disappeared.

It is not invading lymph nodes, but will continue to grow. Other option would be I plan to radiation
every day for a time. Not willing to do that! Just take the knife and get it over. One or two
nights in hospital and then to Brenda's neat house for recovery. Surgery scheduled for the 31st.
Not to worry....in good hands all around! I plan to be around longe than Trump!

What do you suppose the actual chances in a million are to hear the phrase "made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs" in any one 24-hour period from two very different sources? (Orig Star Wars and Year 12, Episode one, Grey's Anatomy) Actually, only a couple of hours apart.
I would not expect that phrase to appear the first time anywhere!

We came home from a gathering honouring our grandniece who died last September, from being hit by a car, and today bringing two of our young granddaughters home with us. When we got here our power was out, so I am just learning of today's violence in Charlottesville and DT's unconscionable response.
Sign me Speechless in Vermont.
Fortunately, someone has the words I couldn't put together, and spoke what was in my heart. THIS:

an article in September's Harper's Magazine, "Women of the Alt-Right". It's disturbing, just doesn't make sense to me, regressive, illogical, ideological and this substitutes for thinking. I have a friend, maybe more than one, women who voted for and support Trump. It feels like insanity to me, and I simply can't understand it.
Nice day so far after days and days of rain. The deck is about finished. They did a beautiful job and it's safe to walk on it.
