I think you are correct, Puddle. Fear, I've read, is the strongest emotion. It can turn into anger and grief. People, sometimes, who have felt the most insecurity, most inadequate might feel better if others were worse than they. Sad, but certainly part of our humanness. I'm glad that so many are standing up, shouting even, that hate and violence, bigotry, prejudice have no place here. So, if our racism has come out into the open, which I think it has, so have people come out to say that it is not to be tolerated.

Apparently they're everywhere. A cook at UNO's in South Burlington, Vermont was fired on Tuesday, because he carried a torch in Charlottesville and shouted white supremacist slogans. UNO's said they want to ensure that their workers and guests are safe and treated fairly.
Good Morning, Another warm, sunny day here. I talked to an old high school friend and debate partner. She said she hasn't seen one historian on the news media or in the newspapers talking about how after the Civil War there was an ongoing propaganda campaign to legitimize and change the story about the South to make them look heroic, to see it as a war between the states instead of ending slavery and injustice. Where is the news media today? I suggested she write a major newspaper what she told me. She is a historian and former history teacher and has knowledge about the Civil War particularly.
Maybe things have to become so awful that change will be possible. I wonder, though, if we aren't seeing the results of constant commercialization and dumbing down of the news. So many newspapers are remnants of what used to be coverage with most of the news from AP and little depth. Many columnists have been discontinued or laid off. The TV news both locally and nationally is trivial, violence featured, and without depth or evidence. This has been coming for a long time, and I think we are seeing its damaging results.
Other than that, life goes on. Our deck is completed except for paint touch up. I'll be going to a local eclipse party in our neighborhood. Should be interesting.
It's my youngest granddaughter's birthday today. She and my kiddle were off before six to pick up her cousins and they are all headed south to Charlotte to see the eclipse together. She heads back to Utah the day after.
I just made a solar eclipse box through the directions on Facebook. I took a dog biscuit box, cut a white piece of paper to fit the bottom, cut the top off and covered one side with a doubled over piece of aluminum foil, put a nail hole in the aluminum, and put a cardboard strip in the middle of the top and left the other side open. The way to use it is to hold the box so that the aluminum foil, with a nail hole in the middle, casts a shadow on the white paper in the bottom, and I look through the open side. It's not a pretty piece of work, but I not much of a crafts person.

Nice day so far. I've always felt that there's something special about Sundays as if it's a gift to rebalance the rest of the week. In Samoa we went to church, feasted at the toonai (Sunday dinner) and were expected to relax for the rest of the day. We weren't even supposed to go swimming. In Chicago, the constant beeping of buses and traffic stopped as well.
Ahhh, yes, Pat. "Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy." Our culture has thrown out the baby with the bathwater. I wish everyone would hold off on mowing their lawns until at least 2pm on Sundays, to allow a communal time of quiet.
Hi Friends, The eclipse party was fun. The red orange of the moon was a color I've never seen before. We had boxes for viewing and several pair of certified glasses. Someone remarked that places were selling them for $10 to $50. Ah, capitalism.
The potluck food: spinach balls, fruit, cinnamon rolls, deviled eggs, cookies, sausage bits, and other items: delicious. We played charades and pin the moon on the sun, just like Pin the Donkey. Good people here, kind, generous, interesting.
Just got a picture from the cell phone of my youngest grand, Alysa. Seems she's having a good time with her cuzzes. Gonna be a race to get back for her plane from DC tomorrow. Send them traveling mercies.

Thanks Listener for the photos. Excellent, so clear. I've never seen such a bright red/orange as the moon was. It was interesting to see the curve move from right to left as the moon moved. We had 93% coverage, and when some clouds came, it looked totally dark.
We also filled out a page with our names, ages, place of birth and two lines of wisdom for a time capsule. It will be buried on our neighbors' property.
Oh, I forgot to mention that one feature of seeing the telescope's display was that the image on the "cone" was constantly inching along, so that Mr. St. Louis had to keep adjusting the position of the telescope every few minutes. The reason? We were witnessing the Earth's rotation! Awesome!!
Thank you, thank you Pat. Brenda is a fine helper...she remembers the details of what to do, when to stop certain meds, supplements. She keeps an updated list on her phone. Valet parking is well worth the cost!

Pat, you offer a very apropos image, suggesting DT as a projection of the worst in our culture. Yes, I think that may be all too accurate. I read an article years ago, written by a wonderful monk, about how Princess Diana was one onto whom the people of Great Britain projected their own image of who a Princess must be. So that when she died the psyche of the whole nation was wounded. In that instance, people projected their best hopes onto Diana. In this case, it may well be that some people in American are projecting their own worst hopes onto DT...and (unlike Diana) he is soaking it up. I think it is very dangerous and I deeply wish Congress would get up the will and courage to invoke the 25th. He is utterly unfit for office.

We were under a Tornado Watch for most of the day and evening. First one in about 5 years! So while I kept tabs on the radar, my 9 year old granddaughter and I watched The Wizard of Oz. 😄

I did listen to Trump's speech. ARGHH! He's a disaster. One of the cashiers at Safeway remarked that he saved us from a catastrophe after the eclipse. I said, no, he said it was the greatest eclipse of all time because of him. It's even hard to laugh.

Also, VT*Granddaughter (almost age 10) enjoyed her first ever Sailing Races! And! An unforecast Squall came up, with strong unexpected wind, and whitecaps. Grandad (Bill) tells me that there were times when the boat was heeling WAY over and Grand was in the cockpit hanging onto the up side, and when a big puff would come her feet were actually lifted off the deck slightly and she would squeal (hit the high notes) then exclaim, "I *love* this!!" LOL!! She got huge smiles from the school owner and the regulars! 😀 Grandad is SUPER proud of her!! A very exciting night on the water for all concerned, and what a spectacular first racing night for VT*Granddaughter!!!
Hurricane Harvey is going to be a disaster for Texas and across the already-saturated south, with up to 20" of rain and high winds, as it makes landfall Friday overnight as a Category 3.
Oh, how sad for residents of Texas, Louisiana, Missouri and wherever the storm is a deluge. Someone remarked today that we haven't had a normal winter in Colorado in ten years. If ever we need to take climate change, pollution, our consumer and dump habits, it's now. I have old magazines from the 70s where experts were talking about the extreme weather we were going to experience if we didn't do something now. We didn't, or at least not enough.
I attended my poetry class at the Estes Park Senior Center. It was terrific. The instructor was in the Peace Corps in Iran, taught at an alternative school in Estes Park and at various universities. We learned a new form, the lune. The variety we were taught was first line, three words, second line, five words, third line, three words. This came out of Japanese forms of Haiku, Senryu, and Tanka.

So, after all this focus on Harvey, turns out my Eldest, who has been in Taiwan all week serving as an International TaeKwonDo referee at the Taipei Universiade (basically the Olympics for college students), has been waiting to hear what would happen with Tropical Storm Pahkar. I didn't realise he had flown in through Hong Kong last weekend (which was hit with a Cat 2 on Wednesday!), and will be flying out through Hong Kong Sunday afternoon (as Pahkar makes landfall). Fortunately, the storm seems to be staying a Tropical Storm (it had been expected to reach cyclone strength) and is veering a little further from Hong Kong. We are hopeful!

This monster storm along the Gulf Coast seems to pretty much made its wreckage from Galveston to Corpus Christi and inland farther than I would normally go to get out of the way when I was living there......Palacios is about halfway between the two and the little house I rented was plumb across the street from an arm of Matagorda Bay. Monster Storm. Hoping to hear from friends there...but they have survived others as strong...they just pitch in and rebuild, etc.
By this time next week I should be recovering at Brenda's....surgery early on the 31st...one or two nights in the hospital and off to Brenda's tore-coup. I-pad in hand so I can know that you all are behaving ;)! Love to alll.

Wouldyoubelieve that as my son's flight finally arrived in Hong Kong more than 2 hours late, as they taxied in from the runway he saw his connecting flight pulling away from the gate? The other two flights to the USA were already maxed out, so he's stuck in Hong Kong overnight. Alone.
Safety is the bottom line. It's WHY people wait for two hours on the tarmac to fly, while a tropical storm clears the airport they are headed to. It's why they finally land and while their flight is taxiing to the terminal they see their connecting flight pulling away from the gate...and get to spend the night alone in a foreign city...and face a 15 hour flight arriving a half hour too late for their next connecting flight so have to endure either a 9 hour layover or a 6 hour drive. Heh.
Eldest says us driving 6 hours to pick him up and drive him 6 hours home is over the top. And it might be, but we'd be happy to do it, and I hope even knowing we would is a balm to him right now. It's hard to be alone at a time like this. HE's trying to decide whether to wait 9 hours for the connecting flight, or to rent a car and drive home.
He is FINALLY on his way home!! Even his delayed by 18 hours flight left an extra hour late! But we need to cut the folks in Hong Kong a LOT of slack, given the horrible week they've had with a Cat 2 followed by a TS!
Well, Eldest has made it as far as JFK so far. It was nearly 16 hours in the air, flying east..the worst direction for jet lag. Bleah!
I kind of wish we had just shown up at JFK today to surprise him. He said it would be "over the top" (so we relented) but so what? It would have made his life a lot easier today and made a lifelong memory.

Pat, you offer a very apropos image, suggesting DT as a projection of the worst in our culture. Yes, I think that may be all too accurate. I read an article years ago, written by a wonderful monk, about how Princess Diana was one onto whom the people of Great Britain projected their own image of who a Princess must be. So that when she died the psyche of the whole nation was wounded. In that instance, people projected their best hopes onto Diana. In this case, it may well be that some people in American are projecting their own worst hopes onto DT...and (unlike Diana) he is soaking it up. I think it is very dangerous and I deeply wish Congress would get up the will and courage to invoke the 25th. He is utterly unfit for office.
Shirlee, we are all rooting for you and your surgical team!! And we are always rooting for Brenda as well. You raised a wonderful human being. That apple didn't fall far from the tree. 🍎
We were under a Tornado Watch for most of the day and evening. First one in about 5 years!

One of the cashiers at Safeway remarked that he saved us from a catastrophe after the eclipse. I said, no, he said it was the greatest eclipse of all time because of him. It's even hard to laugh.

Wednesday was momentous!
First of all, we have a new grandnephew!! 💙 Henry Jacob 💙
Also, VT*Granddaughter (almost age 10) enjoyed her first ever Sailing Races! And! An unforecast Squall came up, with strong unexpected wind, and whitecaps. Grandad (Bill) tells me that there were times when the boat was heeling WAY over and Grand was in the cockpit hanging onto the up side, and when a big puff would come her feet were actually lifted off the deck slightly and she would squeal (hit the high notes) then exclaim, "I *love* this!!" LOL!! She got huge smiles from the school owner and the regulars! 😀 Grandad is SUPER proud of her!! A very exciting night on the water for all concerned, and what a spectacular first racing night for VT*Granddaughter!!!

Oh, how sad for residents of Texas, Louisiana, Missouri and wherever the storm is a deluge. Someone remarked today that we haven't had a normal winter in Colorado in ten years. If ever we need to take climate change, pollution, our consumer and dump habits, it's now. I have old magazines from the 70s where experts were talking about the extreme weather we were going to experience if we didn't do something now. We didn't, or at least not enough.
I attended my poetry class at the Estes Park Senior Center. It was terrific. The instructor was in the Peace Corps in Iran, taught at an alternative school in Estes Park and at various universities. We learned a new form, the lune. The variety we were taught was first line, three words, second line, five words, third line, three words. This came out of Japanese forms of Haiku, Senryu, and Tanka.

So, last night police in Vermont's capitol city of Montpelier were called because of a skunk that had a problem. It had a Yoplait yogurt cup stuck on its head! How was it resolved: The officers Googled "How to get a yogurt cup off a skunk's head without getting sprayed" watched a YouTube video...and it worked! 😀

So, after all this focus on Harvey, turns out my Eldest, who has been in Taiwan all week serving as an International TaeKwonDo referee at the Taipei Universiade (basically the Olympics for college students), has been waiting to hear what would happen with Tropical Storm Pahkar. I didn't realise he had flown in through Hong Kong last weekend (which was hit with a Cat 2 on Wednesday!), and will be flying out through Hong Kong Sunday afternoon (as Pahkar makes landfall). Fortunately, the storm seems to be staying a Tropical Storm (it had been expected to reach cyclone strength) and is veering a little further from Hong Kong. We are hopeful!
Pat! OF COURSE they had to publish it!! It was worth waiting for!!!
And I am so very happy that you have wolves!! As Wildlife*Biologist*Son once exclaimed (upon telling us he was interested in working with mountain lions): "Large predators are cool, Mom!"

seems to pretty much made its wreckage from Galveston to Corpus Christi
and inland farther than I would normally go to get out of the way when I was
living there......Palacios is about halfway between the two and the little house
I rented was plumb across the street from an arm of Matagorda Bay. Monster
Storm. Hoping to hear from friends there...but they have survived others as
strong...they just pitch in and rebuild, etc.
By this time next week I should be recovering at Brenda's....surgery early on
the 31st...one or two nights in the hospital and off to Brenda's tore-coup.

Looks like son's flights will all be on time!! Amazing!
Wouldyoubelieve that as my son's flight finally arrived in Hong Kong more than 2 hours late, as they taxied in from the runway he saw his connecting flight pulling away from the gate? The other two flights to the USA were already maxed out, so he's stuck in Hong Kong overnight. Alone.
Safety is the bottom line. It's WHY people wait for two hours on the tarmac to fly, while a tropical storm clears the airport they are headed to. It's why they finally land and while their flight is taxiing to the terminal they see their connecting flight pulling away from the gate...and get to spend the night alone in a foreign city...and face a 15 hour flight arriving a half hour too late for their next connecting flight so have to endure either a 9 hour layover or a 6 hour drive. Heh.
Eldest says us driving 6 hours to pick him up and drive him 6 hours home is over the top. And it might be, but we'd be happy to do it, and I hope even knowing we would is a balm to him right now. It's hard to be alone at a time like this. HE's trying to decide whether to wait 9 hours for the connecting flight, or to rent a car and drive home.
He is FINALLY on his way home!! Even his delayed by 18 hours flight left an extra hour late! But we need to cut the folks in Hong Kong a LOT of slack, given the horrible week they've had with a Cat 2 followed by a TS!

Well, Eldest has made it as far as JFK so far. It was nearly 16 hours in the air, flying east..the worst direction for jet lag. Bleah!
I kind of wish we had just shown up at JFK today to surprise him. He said it would be "over the top" (so we relented) but so what? It would have made his life a lot easier today and made a lifelong memory.
Bill says if there were a wall in Texas, it would just be holding the water in. Better to spend for a SEA wall~!!
