Ralph Stanley--I had to miss. IBS started to kick in and wiped me out. Brenda assures me he is in the surrounding area often. Ricky Skaggs says "that Ralph is a road hog--he LOVES to travel." So I do hope to have another chance. The first time I heard him sing "Oh, Death" there were shivers up and down my spine for hours. I had never heard what he calls a "lonesome voice".

We're south of it, and it has moved south, but the real danger is west, and that and north is where it's moving. 15 percent contained (love the unlimited characters allowed!) When you think of the New Mexico fire of 300 square miles, that could happen to us.

There seem to be a fair number of various original log building in the country side around GSO. Tobacco barns, and other functional outbuildings, sometimes a cabin. They are lovely, mostly in good condition, and not hidden in brambles and briars. What awes me is that they are remnants of our native forest. For that alone they deserve respect and protection.
Nope it wasn't me. Rove has his own PAC, so he'd be part of any rePublican campaign. But I actually think Romney's so cocksure of himself that I don't think he much listens to anyone. Very different kettle of fish than the Fortunate Son. Interesting how often the 'Publicans nominate someone who is just a front/puppet. Starting with Reagan. They do better with the scripted, too. I've been awed for some time at the Caucasian strain of the human race: its propensity to use and destroy what's at hand, and move on. The other two parts don't seem to be "gifted" with that particular talent. In China, I was amazed to pass fields being farmed continuously for 6 thousand years. And there was still dirt to farm. *Our* equivalent, the Euphrates River Valley was turned to dust millenia ago. We are a careless race, and dat's da troot.

Last couple of days, been working on the wrought iron chair/seat inserts for the breakfast table set on the front porch: Beau has removed the seats, and eaten the fabric and foam off the top. (Well, not eating -- just tearing into tiny bits.) To reupholster them seemed like inviting more of the same. Was going to paper mache them, and paint, but have no flour in the house any more, nor any modgepodge. The seats are plywood, with two holes drilled to allow "breathing" when sat on. It was the two holes, times two, that I was looking for a way to decently cover. Found it: used wood putty (left over from another fix it job on a chest on the porch. Which mostly filled the holes. Went back today, finished the filling and added a skim to even out the wood grain. Just got the first coat of paint on. Yep: my Indian Red. The table and chairs are white, and everything else on the porch that isn't natural wood is a cadet blue. So, will do the bottom of the wood chest (holds tools) the cadet blue, and the top in the red. Tie it all together. Mebbe, lol!
Meanwhile was thinking on ways to use the beetle killed pine if I could afford to get some here. . . . It's SO beautiful! It would make really lovely wainscoting, don't you think?
I think just a panel of the beetle kill pine would look lovely hanging on a wall, but wainscoting would be superb. I love your creativity, Puddle.
Our picnic was a fine ride out towards a county park area, but actually ended up parking and eating in the parking area of the cemetery of a Primitive Baptist church. We have had many a picnic in the car looking at old graveyards. Lifelong interest in gravestone art for me.
As a bonus we found on the same road several original log buildings--including a double cabin which I had never seen before. A double log cabin is the setting for one of Lee Smith's novels. NC author who writes historical fiction set in NC. One other building was a barn with a lean-to and another which may have been a tobacco barn. All well loved and taken care of.
These little outings will need to be put on hold until after the 4th of July. Fun Fourth Festival coming up--a four day community celebration. Brenda will be b-u-s-y until then!
Got the second coat on an mostly dry, and reinstalled in the chairs. Looks a bit like stucco, lol! It'll do.
Shirlee, sounds lovely. I've never gravestone hunted, but have been interested in books on the subject. Some of was pretty grim, to say the least, but I've always loved the angels at the top. . .

I've been awed for some time at the Caucasian strain of the human race: its propensity to use and destroy what's at hand, and move on. The other two parts don't seem to be "gifted" with that particular talent. In China, I was amazed to pass fields being farmed continuously for 6 thousand years. And there was still dirt to farm. *Our* equivalent, the Euphrates River Valley was turned to dust millenia ago. We are a careless race, and dat's da troot.
We somehow need to learn to stop and stay and keep. I wish the so called political conservatives were part of that idear, but they seem to be the MOST careless -- "saved" perhaps by the belief that God will return and save us from what we've wrought. . . .
The beetle kill pine is lovely--must be soothing to see when you first wake.
Off in a bit with Brenda for a short ride and a picnic--soothing because neither one of us could be in Dodge City, Kansas today for a grandson's wedding! Third grandchild to be married--and another one coming up next year.

Last couple of days, been working on the wrought iron chair/seat inserts for the breakfast table set on the front porch: Beau has removed the seats, and eaten the fabric and foam off the top. (Well, not eating -- just tearing into tiny bits.) To reupholster them seemed like inviting more of the same. Was going to paper mache them, and paint, but have no flour in the house any more, nor any modgepodge. The seats are plywood, with two holes drilled to allow "breathing" when sat on. It was the two holes, times two, that I was looking for a way to decently cover. Found it: used wood putty (left over from another fix it job on a chest on the porch. Which mostly filled the holes. Went back today, finished the filling and added a skim to even out the wood grain. Just got the first coat of paint on. Yep: my Indian Red. The table and chairs are white, and everything else on the porch that isn't natural wood is a cadet blue. So, will do the bottom of the wood chest (holds tools) the cadet blue, and the top in the red. Tie it all together. Mebbe, lol!
Meanwhile was thinking on ways to use the beetle killed pine if I could afford to get some here. . . . It's SO beautiful! It would make really lovely wainscoting, don't you think?
Heh! Just talked to the kiddle -- he's arriving tomorrow with his papa! Going to be bizzy this weekend! And yay!

Our picnic was a fine ride out towards a county park area, but actually ended up parking and eating in the parking area of the cemetery of a
Primitive Baptist church. We have had many a picnic in the car looking at old graveyards. Lifelong interest in gravestone art for me.
As a bonus we found on the same road several original log buildings--including a double cabin which I had never seen before. A double log cabin is the setting for one of Lee Smith's novels. NC author who writes historical fiction set in NC. One other building was a barn with a lean-to and another which may have been a tobacco barn. All well loved and taken care of.
These little outings will need to be put on hold until after the 4th of July.

Shirlee, sounds lovely. I've never gravestone hunted, but have been interested in books on the subject. Some of was pretty grim, to say the least, but I've always loved the angels at the top. . .
