I really like Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, NJ. he's quite a guy, very progressive but has been known to work across the aisle in his city to get good things done. He really cares about people, he walks the talk. I think that he would be a good POTUS.

Well, the roads up here have been rather slipsy, especially as we've had below zero temps and whipping winds. Last night it got down to -18.7F (not counting wind chill!). We were lucky the wind had lightened up by that time, so it was only a windchill around -25 to -30F. On Saturday there was a 14 car pileup on I-89. Sen. Pat Leahy was stuck in it on his way to an event at UVM. So another car that was part of his crew stopped to pick him up, but got a flat tire. Not to worry, because Rep. Peter Welch happened by, enroute to the same event, and gave Sen. Pat Leahy a lift. :-D I love Vermont!!

True thing, Jo! Really hard to be outside at all. We have been so lucky not to have heaps and heaps of snow to shovel away! I was, though, very surprised o see Burlington, Vermont listed in the first column of three showing highest snow totals for the season so far. It doesn't feel like we've had all that much, but we're lots higher than our average snow total for mid-February.
All that snow and then a train derailment in West VA. Puddle, I surely hope it is not impacting your water. Several trains went into a river and the explosions were frightenly big. Oil from ND. Second on in a year. Other one was in VA. When will we stop it!

Yes, Barb, I heard about the crash on the radio this morning, the oil going into the river. They shut down the water plant, but since have opened it, I believe.
I just read in the March Harpers Magazine about the radioactive air, water, buildings, soil from the explosion of Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant in 2011. It will take 300 years to bring down the levels of radiation.
What was Japan thinking of to put nuclear power plants on islands where earthquakes take place?! And, since the Industrial Revolution, what have we done to this earth??? Chemicals, radiation, plastics, damming of rivers, mining, fossil fuels, urbanization, factory farming, loss of species and habitat.
I think it's very very serious, and I wonder if the next generations will be able to survive amidst all the damage.
On a more cheerful note, despite ill health and other difficulties, we are able to chronicle what it is like to age and live the last parts of our lives. We know so much more from human experience, interactions, reading, working, developing interests and talents. Maybe we can contribute to the younger generations something of what we have learned.
Good News: My primary doc sent me to the Infectious Disease specialist because I get recurrent shingles and that makes her uncomfortable because it's unusual. I just met with two specialists, and they said to do exactly what I have been doing...!! The happy take-away is that it is highly unlikely that I would develop resistance to the anti-viral med I take. We are all on the same page again at last. Plus, now I am invited to call my I.D. doc any time without need of referral. Really nice doctors there, too. I love it when this happens!!
listener, that IS good news! If we can't do away with what plagues our bodies, it's well to find those that are knowledgeable enough to accept our solutions, lol! I sometimes feel like I've spent my whole life in search of medical types that know as much as I do about what's plaguing me. . . .
And that goes back to long long before the internets! I've never gone so far as to assume that I know more *overall* than they do, but for the most part, I've known a good deal more than they about MY issues.
Only twice have a just run into docs in the normal search who knew as much as I did. The general surgeon when I had the Graves Disease, who was so delighted to find an aware patient that he began regaling me with information that I'm not sure I wanted to hear, lol! And the radiologist in the ER when I was getting diagnosed with Achalasia. Oh! And the surgeon who fixed it. Looks like the surgeons are winning, grin.
I have had good luck with surgeons also, Puddle. The surgery last year on my tongue,cheek and neck was done by one known for excellent work-- he is also one of the kindest and most understanding of doc's. The other was a very young man who did a total hip replacement during the night. That was 1988. When I checked out he said "I put that sucker in there to stay." In 2015 it is still there. Expected life for this procedure is ten years! Stay well and warm, all!
Had a lovely cheering day here--cold and bright and about half a foot of snow. Nancy came down on her ATV equipped with a plow and did the road. She vowed that after last time (when it melted and solidified before she could get to it) that she would seize the light fluffy snow days. And did. Most brutal cold of the season is still ahead, but doing well, so far.
Dr Lee's fairly graphic description of how to save parathyroids during a thyroidectomy was a little more than I wished, but he was so delighted to share the process, lol! (You turn the removed thyroid over, and cut out each of the four parathyroids on the back. If by chance, you've severed the connective nerve, you mince the parathyroid, and tuck it behind a neck muscle . . . ) No small thing, really--I've read case histories of damaged parathyroids which have resulted in decades of muscle spasms. If the post op year was typical, I can't imagine decades. . . . I had charlie horses in my scalp muscles!! All kinds of places one never knew they *had* muscles!
Some times one is reminded how wonderfully well this meat machine which we inhabit works almost all of the time. . . .
Both of my major diseases are genetic, and usually triggered young. And until about a hundred years ago, fatal. Both stress triggered. If I'd lived my grandmother's life, I'd have been dead in my twenties.

This just in!! The National Nursing Network's legislation (HR 379) has just received the support of the American Nurses Association! There now being no opposition to the bill, it is highly likely to pass during this session of Congress!! I have been following this legislation since it was just a twinkle in the eye of founder Teri Mills, RN. It will be a joy to see it pass, so that alongside the Surgeon General we will have a National Nurse for Public Health, with focus on Prevention! smile emoticon

I read the day's readings, and always appreciate Isaiah (58:1-2) about keeping a true fast by breaking every yoke. I might have gone to an actual service and gotten smudged. But then I read Thomas Merton's chapter "Infused Contemplation" from his book The Inner Experience, and it was suuuuuccchhh a comfort about how I no longer find most liturgical experiences nurturing. He speaks of the dilemma of the contemplative who no longer finds sustenance in the life of the community (and I'm certain he was speaking from his own experience, his struggles with the hierarchy to at last be given permission to live in hermitage!)...

So, I drove through the snow squalls to the eye doctor today, then ran five errands on the way home. As I got back into the car after the fifth errand, I glanced at myself in the mirror and burst out laughing! The yellow dye my eye doc used to closely examine my eyes made me look like I had some strange and possibly Gothic health concern; it was all around both eyes and had even dripped down my cheeks! Ha! Either the doc's office should have mentioned it, or I've just got to become a little more vain. :-D
Wow, puddle. You have it colder than i do, tonight. Presently (1:00am) it's -1F here, and we might make it down to -4F. Much nicer than the -19.2F we had on the weekend! Ha!

Yesterday we went into Loveland and had lunch at Mo' Betta Gumbo, a restaurant filled with beads and bling, and the chef coming to your table bringing samples. We had fried oysters and beignets for dessert. It's a fun place and delicious. We've been wanting to go there for months.

Bill and I went to a Composting Workshop today! Afterward we walked through the beautify greenhouse and shop (different location of the same garden center we love). What I realised is that one of the reasons I need to walk through a greenhouse is the super high leave of oxygen in there! Wow!!
We look to have about 12"--and more coming. Nancy thinks we'll get about 18"--yikes! She's already making plans to get Elmer to dig us out. . . . Going to be about 7 degrees warmer tonight than it is now. . . .

cataract surgery tomorrow - my cold is gone so I am ready to go this time! I have to leave for hospital about 6:30 am and the temp will be around -19 with bitter winds. yuck. not what I want to face that early in the morning but it will be good to get it over with!! my brother is dropping me off and picking me up - he's a sweetheart!!

How did the surgery go, Jo! Hopefully, as well as mine did. I was never so happy to have had a surgery and my eyesight is astounding. I started wearing glasses in the 5th grade, now I only need them for reading because getting old is not something they can fix like cataracts.

Hi all, thank you for your well wishes! Other than NOT wanting to go out at 7 am with a wind chill somewhere around -10 (there was a hint of spring yesterday, It was 34 and no wind!) things went well. the doc had to do a couple of preventative procedures that he didn't have to do for the other eye, to protect my cornea from damage related to the dystrophy, but he thinks it went well, says only time will tell. I am having pain this time but the steroid drops every 2 hours help. My brother took me to break my fast on the way home and that felt good, I was very hungry!!
Listener I am good on groceries, a good friend stopped b last night and took me to the store, but I would love to see you soon! Let's get together when it warms up a bit. xo for your offer!!
I can't believe that February is almost gone - I can't wait for warmer weather either! Everybody take extra good care of yourselves as we go through this up and down weather cycle, it seems that's when peeps get sick, I think it takes a toll on us, all those ups and downs!

I read the day's readings, and always appreciate Isaiah (58:1-2) about keeping a true fast by breaking every yoke. I might have gone to an actual service and gotten smudged. But then I read Thomas Merton's chapter "Infused Contemplation" from his book The Inner Experience, and it was suuuuuccchhh a comfort about how I no longer find most liturgical experiences nurturing. He speaks of the dilemma of the contemplative who no longer finds sustenance in the life of the community (and I'm certain he was speaking from his own experience, his struggles with the hierarchy to at last be given permission to live in hermitage!)...
"If only he could be alone and quiet, and remain in the emptiness, darkness and purposelessness in which God speaks with such overwhelming effect! But no, *spiritual* lights and nosegays, he must think and say words, he must sign "Alleluias" that somebody else wants him to feel. He must strive to smack his lips on a sweetness which seems to be unutterably coarse and foul: not because of what it aspires to say, but simply because it is secondhand."
So, I drove through the snow squalls to the eye doctor today, then ran five errands on the way home. As I got back into the car after the fifth errand, I glanced at myself in the mirror and burst out laughing! The yellow dye my eye doc used to closely examine my eyes made me look like I had some strange and possibly Gothic health concern; it was all around both eyes and had even dripped down my cheeks! Ha! Either the doc's office should have mentioned it, or I've just got to become a little more vain. :-D

I was very pleased at our meeting of the 46th dems last night that a volunteer did come forward to take over coffee and cookies. And she's from one of out newer areas that got redistricted into us. Hopefully that should bring forth more from that little city.

We're awaiting the predicted biggest storm so far this winter. Right now, it's 50 degrees, cloudy, mild.
Yesterday we went into Loveland and had lunch at Mo' Betta Gumbo, a restaurant filled with beads and bling, and the chef coming to your table bringing samples. We had fried oysters and beignets for dessert. It's a fun place and delicious. We've been wanting to go there for months.
Yes, this is a long winter, though the East and Midwest have really had the weather. But spring does come, though there was a winter in the 1800's in Colorado they say that summer never arrived, but that was Colorado.
I do wonder about the brains of our politicians, Giuliani's remarks. Dear Heaven, how can you be so stupid, so ignorant, so bigoted?

Wow, this is a snow storm, dumping buckets, trailers full. It's been years since I've seen the sky like this, a white-out, wind, dense, dense snow, an inch already in just a half hour.

Snow arrived--all nice and dark in here due to snowed-over skylights. Warmer than it's been for a while though, so small rejoicing. Looks like about half a foot. So far. Wide range of predictions depending on source.
And the cookies are absolutely life saving when carbs are forbidden. . . . Experiment for this week is going to be making chocolate chips for a different kind of cookie. Got the cocoa butter with this last batch from Amazon. I'm a little concerned because it doesn't fit the description (is almost non fragrant), but will see.
Bill and I went to a Composting Workshop today! Afterward we walked through the beautify greenhouse and shop (different location of the same garden center we love). What I realised is that one of the reasons I need to walk through a greenhouse is the super high leave of oxygen in there! Wow!!

Pat, the Year without a Summer happened to the whole WORLD! Germany was hardest hit, but New England, the Canadian Atlantic and Europe got it pretty harsh too. People left home and went begging for food, migrating to places less hard hit.

crazy weather! we have bit of new snow and went from the deep freeze to 30s today, back into the deep freeze tonight. I'm still happy that I don't live in Boston!!
cataract surgery tomorrow - my cold is gone so I am ready to go this time! I have to leave for hospital about 6:30 am and the temp will be around -19 with bitter winds. yuck. not what I want to face that early in the morning but it will be good to get it over with!! my brother is dropping me off and picking me up - he's a sweetheart!!

Not like Boston. Which one probably could not even see from the same altitude! Need to build a pipeline from back east to the west to ship that snow where we need it!

I am so glad you are well again and can finally have the surgery!! I'm available Tues & Weds if you need anything. On Thursday, Grandson is coming to spend the day while his parents house hunt! Yeaaahhhh!! Maybe Friday too. We'll see.
Bright and warm (50º) and gorgeous! Road undisturbed so far, save for occasional animal footprints. Snow blanket slipped from sun room roof this a.m. with a huge whoomp!! Large and noisy globs dropping onto the roof. Poor Beau's all jumpy about the bombardment, lol!

A foot and a half of snow here, temperature in the single digits, will be cold tonight. The snow continues, is supposed to go tonight and tomorrow. It's very light, but with the cold, it will become heavy and frozen.

How did the surgery go, Jo! Hopefully, as well as mine did. I was never so happy to have had a surgery and my eyesight is astounding. I started wearing glasses in the 5th grade, now I only need them for reading because getting old is not something they can fix like cataracts.
Hoping all the snow goes away swiftly!

Hi all, thank you for your well wishes! Other than NOT wanting to go out at 7 am with a wind chill somewhere around -10 (there was a hint of spring yesterday, It was 34 and no wind!) things went well. the doc had to do a couple of preventative procedures that he didn't have to do for the other eye, to protect my cornea from damage related to the dystrophy, but he thinks it went well, says only time will tell. I am having pain this time but the steroid drops every 2 hours help. My brother took me to break my fast on the way home and that felt good, I was very hungry!!
Listener I am good on groceries, a good friend stopped b last night and took me to the store, but I would love to see you soon! Let's get together when it warms up a bit. xo for your offer!!
I can't believe that February is almost gone - I can't wait for warmer weather either! Everybody take extra good care of yourselves as we go through this up and down weather cycle, it seems that's when peeps get sick, I think it takes a toll on us, all those ups and downs!

Hope your phone situation is resolved sometime soon, Puddle. It seems that you've been dealing with this for at least a couple of years. Companies just don't pay as much attention to rural areas, I guess.
Today, sitting. I brushed snow off the car, shoveled some of the driveway, and I feel like a broken down car. OOOH! Muscles and bones don't like repetitive action, especially is it's infrequent.
