We watched about 45 minutes of the Republican debate and simply couldn't stand any more than that. Juvenile, egotistic, self aggrandizing, name calling, hostile, it was anything but a debate. How does our culture grow up? It was appalling, scary that these people represent governing in a representative democracy. I dreamed last night of the debates and felt nauseated at the possibility that they actually speak for the American people.

Youngest and DIL went for the requisite tests again, and this time things didn't go well. The symptoms of pre-eclampsia have worsened, so they have her scheduled for a cesarean next Wednesday morning. =HEAVY SIGH= She is soooooo bummed. They have to go in for the requisite tests on Monday, too and, if things have worsened, may do the cesarean then. I am on call and will be there on Monday. Her mother (also an RN) arrives Tuesday night.
I nonetheless had a super-sweet time with Grandson today. After they returned and I went on my way, I pulled together a little care package* for DIL and dropped it off with some potted purple Asters. They were all upstairs so I went in silently and left it all on the kitchen counter.
*Including: a couple of delicious and healthy drinks with two whoopee pies (one chocolate and one raspberry cream), stars for DILs hair, a little plastic horse (for Grandson's collection), and on the very top a little stuffed soft-orange horse covered in sparkles (Mama loves sparkles), and found such a perfect card!!! On the front it read "You deserve a standing ovation for coming this far" and inside it read "May you have many many happy tomorrows".
I hope it helps DIL that Wednesday is the Autumnal Equinox (she is very big on such things) and that Monday is the International Day of Peace.

Thanks Pat, though I don't know how my gesture was received. DIL wrote on her FB page tonight a scathing letter about people who say insensitive things to people who are having cesareans. I read it and have been second-guessing myself ever since...wondering if the care package could have come off as "Oh, you're facing a cesarean, here have a party!" Hopefully my note inside assuaged that, but the jury is still out. I said I know that nothing can take away the pain and ache of this time, but that I hoped this would help her bear it a little more easily today. I know it would have meant a lot to me if someone had done something like this for me. The one time a friend made me a casserole when I was not feeling well, I cried tears of gratitude and relief! But my DIL is a different person, with her own set of preferences. I guess we'll see.
And puddle ~ WE LOVE YOU, and I remember with a full heart how happy you were with Edwin. I am so glad that is still with you. I have no idear how I will cope if Bill dies before I do. If you have any recommendations, I'll sit at your feet. ♥

listener I wouldn't take that rant of hers personally, she is deeply disappointed and on edge, her bp is high and she must be fully hormonal right now. she needed to let that out in some fashion. and yes people DO say insensitive things to women who are having C-sections, but I can't imagine that she is speaking of you. just try to forget what she wrote, today will hopefully be a better day for all.

Hi Jo and Listener, I'm bothered too, but I suspect that Howard got on the bandwagon too soon. I really don't think Hillary is going to be President, and maybe if Bernie is the nominee, Howard will be supportive.
I disagree with some things President Obama has supported: drilling in the Arctic, for one, but I don't expect that a politician I support will always do what I want. Howard Dean is a passionate, ethical, committed Dem, and I'll always honor that.
Listener, I think highly sensitive people who give to others feel deeply other's disapproval or anger, and yet, that's their perspective. Good hearted efforts are still that, and society continues on because of that giving.
listener, I doubt the facebook rant was about you. People tend to be so bad at consolation that they say really awful stuff in the attempt. When I was doing hospice, I was often stunned at the insensitivity of "friends" trying to cheer my patients up. . . . Horrible stories of other deaths in their lives, with the implication that my patient was going through nothing so grim, and should therefore feel grateful. . . . I spent a lot of time as caregiver wishing to punch out the consolers. . . .
I'll be offline for a bit while I move - I should have internet later tonight. I thought I would be in there by tomorrow night but it looks like today is the day. Derek got all of the boxes moved this morning, Luke will be here to help with some of the furniture later this afternoon. I am so grateful for my sons! That means that my sons and my niece and brother who are coming tomorrow can finish off the moving quickly and can help me unpack and move empty boxes out, maybe even hang some things.
The weather is gorgeous for a move, the apartment is so comfortable already. I really lucked out on this whole crazy ride that I've been on. I love, love, love this new home. I will tell you all about it soon!

the move went well! I stayed here last night because my son got way more done yesterday than we all thought that he would. other son and friend joined him about 4:30 to get some larger furniture over here and man am I beat!! and I didn't do much compared to everyone else!! today we finished cleaning up at the other house and started unpacking things. there is still a lot to do but I can do it any time that I want!

Dear Shirlee….You all will definitely hear when the baby appears!! I wish she could snuggle inside Mama for two more weeks. Mama soooo wants to avoid a cesarean that she is undertaking acupuncture, hypnosis and meditation this weekend toward that end. As she isn't due for THREE more weeks, I doubt her body is ready enough to begin labor. It's so sad. She is stable, but the doctors say that if her platelet count drops they will have to do a cesarean with general anesthesia. But if she just has it done, she'd get to be awake and hold her baby right away. I kind of want to scream. I've heard those sorts of things before. The truth is that they could prep the space for a cesarean in ten minutes and unless the baby were in serious distress there is plenty of time for the meds to work and for her to be awake. The truth is that if the baby is in distress she won't be allowed to hold the baby immediately anyway, as they'll whisk the baby away for any needed treatment and tests. It seems to me that as long as her body is stable, they ought to let her gestate along, with even daily check ins. I really dislike insurance companies!!
On the plus side, Son thanked me for the care package and said enough that I was reassured that DILs concerns did not include me. =Whew!= I'm going back on Monday (if not sooner) in the afternoon, so they can have more tests while I care for Grandson. One day at a time, I guess.

Once, when I was on customer relations for Amtrak, I got to pick up a wheelchair bound passenger, and bring him in to the office. He was a researcher with specifically labor in women. As we strolled, he asked me if I knew what started labor. I laughed and said I'd always thought the baby decided. The man did a double take from his chair. . . . That is *exactly* what his research had JUST discovered! Baby secretes a hormone when it's ready to be born, which signals da mom's body to start. . . .
My first was born 3 weeks early, at 7 pounds 11 ounces. Second, 3 weeks late at 8 pounds 3 ounces. Doc said of #1, that his head was already so large that if he'd waited, it might have killed us both.
We're very lucky for our current state medical science--eclampsia used to very regularly kill us. I know she is not wanting to hear that now, but maybe sometime she'll come to see how lucky she actually is.

Three cheers for you, Jo. Your apartment sounds ideal. I'm finding that downsizing is so necessary, and it's difficult to let things go. Prayers and good vibes, please. I got the call at 6:25am that DILs BP was high and they needed me to come so they could go to the hospital. They are there now, and her BP is better, but as she isn't dilated they need to do a cesarean. =Heavy Sigh= She tried so hard … even did acupuncture, hypnosis and meditation this weekend to try to start dilation. Instead of a VBAC she has to have major surgery again. :-( But they are going to make accommodations for skin to skin contact and she will be awake this time. And at least this time it won't be after a 42 hour labor, so she may recover more quickly. Still.
Sweet that the baby will be born on the International Day of Peace! ♡

I was woken at 6:25am by Son asking if I could come ASAP as Mama's BP was skyrocketing and the docs wanted her at the hospital ASAP. Got there to be with Grandson and off they went. Her BP got better, and had she been at all dilated they would have let her try induction. But no, so they went ahead with a cesarean after all. However! This time Mama got to be awake for it, and got to hold the baby right away. And that means so much!
Son sent this text:
"She is indeed a girl! Everly Rose Schulte, 7 lbs 8 oz and 21 inches long with lots of hair, born into mama's arms at 12:58PM on 9/21/2015. Mama and baby are doing very well and are happy to see each other."
BTW, once Rowan and Everly's other grandmother arrived, I zoomed off to a dermatologist appointment where I learned that the man rash under my chin is either poison ivy or something akin. Yikes! I don’t know how it happened, unless it was from petting their cat last week, as she is an outdoor cat and may have walked through something. I suppose I should consider a skin reaction as a positive sign of a stronger immune system. It doesn’t feel very good yet, though! Ha!

Good news on my knee. I love my hip doc he just wants to be involved in decisions about other joints. They did x-rays.....he explained the status of care for damaged knees at this time--cortisone injections up to 3-4 times a year..or surgery and he was not pushing surgery. He just wanted me to know "at this time there a wide gap in care." He also ordered in home PT. I will continue. ice and heat treatment twice a day on knee..as well as my shoulder.
Good thing I have my bed set up with all my toys....Netflix discs, CDs, favorite movies. After a busy, busy life I am more than happy to indulge my lazy side.
Pope Francis arrives today! Will be interesting to see what the nay-sayers will complain about!
The "man rash" I mentioned yesterday should have read "mean rash" and I can now confirm that it is definitely poison ivy. Argh!
Turns out there is a 3" poison ivy plant right in the spot where we turn on our outside hose. Bill added a hose splitter a few years ago, so when I reached down to turn on (and later, off) the sprinkler one day this week, I must have touched it. Oddly, I didn't get it on my hands, but must have subsequently touched the area under my chin. Oh fie!!
I've been in contact with it before (Daughter had it all over and down her throat after playing in it at age 7!) and VT*Grand had it on her leg one year, though I tried to get her away from it in time. But they say it's the second or third time you contact it that it bites most.
Fortunately, with her parents permission and with careful handling, I was still able to hold Grand Everly Rose today!!! Ohhh, how sweet she is!! And OHHH how wonderful big brother Rowan was with her! He was instinctively gentle with her, alternating between softly saying "Hi Baby Sister!" and then laughing in unfettered delight when she made a little squeak sound! He said, so sweetly, "Funny, funny baby!" :-)

Mama is in a lot of pain still. They haven't found a pain med that both works and doesn't make her itchy. But she's healing and going to be okay and we will all help her a lot.
And oh so good, I came home and took a NAP!!! Ahhhhhhhh!
Did I mention that I HAVE TO get my driver's license renewed, so have to get my photo taken (which will last for 4 years)…with poison ivy spreading on my face? I went to the DMV to get it done last week, but got there 10 min after they closed at 4pm. I went today and their server was down! So I have to go back again tomorrow, because there is only a 14 day grace period on license renewal and my birthday was the 10th. HA! Ain't life funny?

Thanks, Jo!! The photos don't even quite convey the unfettered delight in Rowan's laughter as he hears Everly squeak and sees her move. He was so sweet with her and totally melted everyone! And has his Nana said, in disbelief of how gentle he was being, "He was trying to lasso the cat as we were leaving!" LOL! It's wonderful how children comprehend about babies. Kids are wicked smart. ♡

I am watching and listening to Pope Francis on CSPAN, as he addresses a joint session of Congress. He is speaking to the dignity of people and the responsibility of those who make laws. He is using the examples of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton.
It kind of cracks me up that the room is jam-packed and he was greeted with a standing ovation in a room so dedicated to the separation of church and state, and our legislators are listening to what is actually a sermon; and that the Pope, for whom English is not a native language, is speaking very slowly and deliberately. As his sermon builds, I know some there are squirming in their seats. I hope he brings every one of them discomfort and renewed motivation to serve the dignity of the people.
On Wednesday, I finally got my driver's license renewed. As today marks the end of the 14 day grace period, it was none too soon. I'd put it off, as I've been busy lately, and had somehow got a contact rash on the underside of my chin and my neck. I hoped the redness would dissipate before I had to have a photo taken which I would have to look at for the next 4 years. I made sure to choose a blouse to wear that I liked the colour of, as well. I needn't have bothered. The new procedure is to take your eyeglasses off for the photo, and the person says that you may smile, then takes the photo before you actually have time to smile, and it ends up looking like a mug shot. Your blouse doesn't really show, and since it's also a rather blurry photo, the rash didn't matter anyway. Just to make it more interesting, the electronic signature machine garbles your handwriting, even on the 8th try. So now pretty much anyone could use your driver's license. Best of all, this new kind of license is called a "Real ID." { ! }

Rep. John Boehner has announced his resignation as Speaker and of his seat in Congress, effective October 30th. The conservatives are spiteful, unherdable cats. I don't think the likely new guy, Rep McCarthy of California, is going to be good at all. He is far more conservative.

Thanks Pat, though I don't know how my gesture was received. DIL wrote on her FB page tonight a scathing letter about people who say insensitive things to people who are having cesareans. I read it and have been second-guessing myself ever since...wondering if the care package could have come off as "Oh, you're facing a cesarean, here have a party!" Hopefully my note inside assuaged that, but the jury is still out. I said I know that nothing can take away the pain and ache of this time, but that I hoped this would help her bear it a little more easily today. I know it would have meant a lot to me if someone had done something like this for me. The one time a friend made me a casserole when I was not feeling well, I cried tears of gratitude and relief! But my DIL is a different person, with her own set of preferences. I guess we'll see.
And puddle ~ WE LOVE YOU, and I remember with a full heart how happy you were with Edwin. I am so glad that is still with you. I have no idear how I will cope if Bill dies before I do. If you have any recommendations, I'll sit at your feet. ♥
Howard Dean is coming to Springfield MA on Thursday to campaign … for Hillary Clinton.
As a Vermonter, this frustrates me.
I don't care that our outgoing Dem Governor, Peter Shumlin, supports Hillary. They can be tarred with the same brush.
But Dean supporting Hillary over Bernie really bothers me. A lot.
I too am disappointed in Howard. what happened to the 'democratic wing of the democratic party' anyway?

Hi Jo and Listener, I'm bothered too, but I suspect that Howard got on the bandwagon too soon. I really don't think Hillary is going to be President, and maybe if Bernie is the nominee, Howard will be supportive.
I disagree with some things President Obama has supported: drilling in the Arctic, for one, but I don't expect that a politician I support will always do what I want. Howard Dean is a passionate, ethical, committed Dem, and I'll always honor that.
Listener, I think highly sensitive people who give to others feel deeply other's disapproval or anger, and yet, that's their perspective. Good hearted efforts are still that, and society continues on because of that giving.

listener, I doubt the facebook rant was about you. People tend to be so bad at consolation that they say really awful stuff in the attempt. When I was doing hospice, I was often stunned at the insensitivity of "friends" trying to cheer my patients up. . . . Horrible stories of other deaths in their lives, with the implication that my patient was going through nothing so grim, and should therefore feel grateful. . . . I spent a lot of time as caregiver wishing to punch out the consolers. . . .

I'll be offline for a bit while I move - I should have internet later tonight. I thought I would be in there by tomorrow night but it looks like today is the day. Derek got all of the boxes moved this morning, Luke will be here to help with some of the furniture later this afternoon. I am so grateful for my sons! That means that my sons and my niece and brother who are coming tomorrow can finish off the moving quickly and can help me unpack and move empty boxes out, maybe even hang some things.

the move went well! I stayed here last night because my son got way more done yesterday than we all thought that he would. other son and friend joined him about 4:30 to get some larger furniture over here and man am I beat!! and I didn't do much compared to everyone else!! today we finished cleaning up at the other house and started unpacking things. there is still a lot to do but I can do it any time that I want!

Dear Shirlee….You all will definitely hear when the baby appears!! I wish she could snuggle inside Mama for two more weeks. Mama soooo wants to avoid a cesarean that she is undertaking acupuncture, hypnosis and meditation this weekend toward that end. As she isn't due for THREE more weeks, I doubt her body is ready enough to begin labor. It's so sad. She is stable, but the doctors say that if her platelet count drops they will have to do a cesarean with general anesthesia. But if she just has it done, she'd get to be awake and hold her baby right away. I kind of want to scream. I've heard those sorts of things before. The truth is that they could prep the space for a cesarean in ten minutes and unless the baby were in serious distress there is plenty of time for the meds to work and for her to be awake. The truth is that if the baby is in distress she won't be allowed to hold the baby immediately anyway, as they'll whisk the baby away for any needed treatment and tests. It seems to me that as long as her body is stable, they ought to let her gestate along, with even daily check ins. I really dislike insurance companies!!
On the plus side, Son thanked me for the care package and said enough that I was reassured that DILs concerns did not include me. =Whew!= I'm going back on Monday (if not sooner) in the afternoon, so they can have more tests while I care for Grandson. One day at a time, I guess.

Once, when I was on customer relations for Amtrak, I got to pick up a wheelchair bound passenger, and bring him in to the office. He was a researcher with specifically labor in women. As we strolled, he asked me if I knew what started labor. I laughed and said I'd always thought the baby decided. The man did a double take from his chair. . . . That is *exactly* what his research had JUST discovered! Baby secretes a hormone when it's ready to be born, which signals da mom's body to start. . . .
My first was born 3 weeks early, at 7 pounds 11 ounces. Second, 3 weeks late at 8 pounds 3 ounces. Doc said of #1, that his head was already so large that if he'd waited, it might have killed us both.
We're very lucky for our current state medical science--eclampsia used to very regularly kill us. I know she is not wanting to hear that now, but maybe sometime she'll come to see how lucky she actually is.
Day before yesterday, heard the first acorn hit my roof. Today, the second. Autumn's in the tubes!! Yay!

Oh yes, the kiddle showed up and produced a wagon load of miracles before leaving about three thirty. Lovely time, wonderful birthday gift.
Prayers and good vibes, please. I got the call at 6:25am that DILs BP was high and they needed me to come so they could go to the hospital. They are there now, and her BP is better, but as she isn't dilated they need to do a cesarean. =Heavy Sigh= She tried so hard … even did acupuncture, hypnosis and meditation this weekend to try to start dilation. Instead of a VBAC she has to have major surgery again. :-( But they are going to make accommodations for skin to skin contact and she will be awake this time. And at least this time it won't be after a 42 hour labor, so she may recover more quickly. Still.
Sweet that the baby will be born on the International Day of Peace! ♡

I was woken at 6:25am by Son asking if I could come ASAP as Mama's BP was skyrocketing and the docs wanted her at the hospital ASAP. Got there to be with Grandson and off they went. Her BP got better, and had she been at all dilated they would have let her try induction. But no, so they went ahead with a cesarean after all. However! This time Mama got to be awake for it, and got to hold the baby right away. And that means so much!
Son sent this text:
"She is indeed a girl! Everly Rose Schulte, 7 lbs 8 oz and 21 inches long with lots of hair, born into mama's arms at 12:58PM on 9/21/2015. Mama and baby are doing very well and are happy to see each other."

BTW, once Rowan and Everly's other grandmother arrived, I zoomed off to a dermatologist appointment where I learned that the man rash under my chin is either poison ivy or something akin. Yikes! I don’t know how it happened, unless it was from petting their cat last week, as she is an outdoor cat and may have walked through something. I suppose I should consider a skin reaction as a positive sign of a stronger immune system. It doesn’t feel very good yet, though! Ha!

Good news on my knee. I love my hip doc he just wants to be involved in decisions
about other joints. They did x-rays.....he explained the status of care for damaged knees
at this time--cortisone injections up to 3-4 times a year..or surgery and he was not pushing surgery.
He just wanted me to know "at this time there a wide gap in care." He also ordered in home
PT. I will continue. ice and heat treatment twice a day on knee..as well as my shoulder.
Good thing I have my bed set up with all my toys....Netflix discs, CDs, favorite movies.
After a busy, busy life I am more than happy to indulge my lazy side.
Pope Francis arrives today! Will be interesting to see what the nay-sayers will complain about!

The "man rash" I mentioned yesterday should have read "mean rash" and I can now confirm that it is definitely poison ivy. Argh!
Turns out there is a 3" poison ivy plant right in the spot where we turn on our outside hose. Bill added a hose splitter a few years ago, so when I reached down to turn on (and later, off) the sprinkler one day this week, I must have touched it. Oddly, I didn't get it on my hands, but must have subsequently touched the area under my chin. Oh fie!!
I've been in contact with it before (Daughter had it all over and down her throat after playing in it at age 7!) and VT*Grand had it on her leg one year, though I tried to get her away from it in time. But they say it's the second or third time you contact it that it bites most.
Fortunately, with her parents permission and with careful handling, I was still able to hold Grand Everly Rose today!!! Ohhh, how sweet she is!! And OHHH how wonderful big brother Rowan was with her! He was instinctively gentle with her, alternating between softly saying "Hi Baby Sister!" and then laughing in unfettered delight when she made a little squeak sound! He said, so sweetly, "Funny, funny baby!" :-)

Mama is in a lot of pain still. They haven't found a pain med that both works and doesn't make her itchy. But she's healing and going to be okay and we will all help her a lot.

Did I mention that I HAVE TO get my driver's license renewed, so have to get my photo taken (which will last for 4 years)…with poison ivy spreading on my face? I went to the DMV to get it done last week, but got there 10 min after they closed at 4pm. I went today and their server was down! So I have to go back again tomorrow, because there is only a 14 day grace period on license renewal and my birthday was the 10th. HA! Ain't life funny?

Thanks, Jo!! The photos don't even quite convey the unfettered delight in Rowan's laughter as he hears Everly squeak and sees her move. He was so sweet with her and totally melted everyone! And has his Nana said, in disbelief of how gentle he was being, "He was trying to lasso the cat as we were leaving!" LOL! It's wonderful how children comprehend about babies. Kids are wicked smart. ♡

I am watching and listening to Pope Francis on CSPAN, as he addresses a joint session of Congress. He is speaking to the dignity of people and the responsibility of those who make laws. He is using the examples of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton.
It kind of cracks me up that the room is jam-packed and he was greeted with a standing ovation in a room so dedicated to the separation of church and state, and our legislators are listening to what is actually a sermon; and that the Pope, for whom English is not a native language, is speaking very slowly and deliberately. As his sermon builds, I know some there are squirming in their seats. I hope he brings every one of them discomfort and renewed motivation to serve the dignity of the people.
On Wednesday, I finally got my driver's license renewed. As today marks the end of the 14 day grace period, it was none too soon. I'd put it off, as I've been busy lately, and had somehow got a contact rash on the underside of my chin and my neck. I hoped the redness would dissipate before I had to have a photo taken which I would have to look at for the next 4 years. I made sure to choose a blouse to wear that I liked the colour of, as well.
I needn't have bothered. The new procedure is to take your eyeglasses off for the photo, and the person says that you may smile, then takes the photo before you actually have time to smile, and it ends up looking like a mug shot. Your blouse doesn't really show, and since it's also a rather blurry photo, the rash didn't matter anyway.
Just to make it more interesting, the electronic signature machine garbles your handwriting, even on the 8th try. So now pretty much anyone could use your driver's license. Best of all, this new kind of license is called a "Real ID." { ! }

Rep. John Boehner has announced his resignation as Speaker and of his seat in Congress, effective October 30th. The conservatives are spiteful, unherdable cats. I don't think the likely new guy, Rep McCarthy of California, is going to be good at all. He is far more conservative.
