Yes, we've watched Larkrise to Candleford. Now you know what Mr. Bates was doing before he went to Downton Abbey. ;-) (He literally left Candleford for Downton!) We like the show so much, but it does get preachy at times.

Everyone in town getting ready for our four day Fourth of July celebration! A different non-profit group took it over after the one Brenda works for had to give it up because the woman in charge decided to retire....after a good 30years of shepherding it and the Christmas festival.
I love the acting of the Mrs. Bennett character in the Kiera Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice! I especially love the scene with her on the stairs when Lizzy asks her if marrying off her daughters is all she thinks of, and she basically says, Wait until you are a mother, then tell me what will occupy your thoughts. And Mr. Bennett is good too. There's a fabulous scene at the point when Lizzy refuses to marry Mr. Collins. The photography in this is exquisite! They had such good luck in the filming. Geese rising off the pond at just the right moment. Sunrise blessing one of the final scenes. Definitely do see it.

There is still no movement on the National Nurse Act. The bill is stuck in the Energy & Commerce Committee. I got a call today from Congressman Peter Welch's health aide, updating me. Though Peter has spoken with Congressman Fred Upton of Michigan, that committee Chair is still holding off on calling a hearing on the bill. It has 85 House members as co-sponsors (43R and 42D), and 118 national nursing and health related groups in support. It requires NO appropriation. I cannot fathom what the holdup could be!
If you want to put in a good word for the bill, and/or ask that the Chair call for a hearing on the bill, it's H.R. 379, and Rep. Upton's office number is: 202 225-3761.
It's also Canada Day! The poor citizens of southern Quebec are getting soaked with thunderstorms. We are too, of course. At least we aren't under a Tornado Watch as in the southern counties of Vermont right now. Already one tornado warning, too. So far we still have power. Bill and I are headed out to the Playhouse to see Sister Act tonight. Hope the power holds! Ha!
Lots of rain today, some sweeping, hard pounding, but with so much heat, we can use it. Glad you are all fine and enjoying life. We watched Cabaret last night, and how brilliant and horrifying it is. Bob Fosse choreographed the dances, and they were perfect. The editing, the dialogue, the photography, this has to be one of the best films of our times. With our own political situation, the echoes of Nazism in the film were a reminder of hate, bigotry, insanity in our own time.
Everything lush and dense here, many wildflowers, and it all seems to be early.

I hear you, Pat. I am comforted in knowing that the nominees *we* got were Howard (then) and Bernie (now)…!! No Dump Trucks, and no Clintons. Speaking of whom, I understand Hillary is supposed to be interviewed by the FBI Saturday. Of course, everyone is saying there will be no indictment because the laws that put her actions in questions were put in place to ensure no enemy got the information, and there is no enemy in this mix (so they say). So, as usual, the elite do as they please and get away with it.

When TV advertisements tout her children's health care law, that happened in the 90's, more than 20 years ago. What has she accomplished in all her years of public service, for instance, Congress, for instance, Secretary of State? Her statements are generalized, bland, and she just doesn't seem to have good judgment or a clear and astute perception of issues.
Yes, I'll vote for her, but without enthusiasm, more to prevent a fascist, Neo-Nazi takeover of government. But, what on earth was Bill Clinton thinking of as he joined Loretta Lynch on her plane? And Hillary, if you can only point to Children's Health Care as achievements, it's not enough.

I was thinking: Hillary, ambitious, driven, intent on achieving political prominence whether it's as Senator, Secretary of State, or President. She marries a charismatic fool who has all the emotional maturity of a preteen, who is irresponsible, and whom I believe she has acted as a control and stabilizing influence.
But, he undermines her at every situation, as a philanderer from the time he was governor, to affairs with Jennifer Flowers, Monica Lewinsky, and others,as President, to damaging her first campaign for president, to this latest irresponsible, stupid, and maybe malevolent effort.
It's almost Shakespearean. Did, does he really intend to cause the damage he does? We can't know someone's thoughts or intentions, but this is just awful. For whatever Hillary's character or personality foibles, no one deserves this kind of punishing. It really is tragic, and what to do about it? For all Hillary's faults, she has worked very hard her whole life; she has done some good; she is capable, and has served for many years. Now, I wonder. If she is exonerated, it is likely people will say it was a deal the Clintons made with the FBI. How bad can it get! Just some speculation on my part.
I admit to being totally at a loss about the reaction to two big wigs having a tete-a-tete in an airplane parked on the tarmac surrounded by reporters. I'm pretty sure that both Bill and Loretta have phones. If undue influence was being tried, why pick such an enormously public place?

Good point. Hysteria is certainly present, and I think maybe I'm prone to it as well. But why give those prone to it, a situation that feeds it? I appreciate your good sense. One of the things I do now is check google--if the main condemnation is by hot air or breitbart or the like, I ignore. During Howard's campaign, it was the Freepers and CounterPunch. These are peeps fueled by hate, and it spills into the culture at large, without actually swelling their ranks, or making them any more accurate.
The Clinton hate machine's been running for almost a quarter of a century now, and is no more accurate now than then. I don't like the Clintons, then or now, but I don't like them because of their politics, which are much to the right of mine. But *those* peeps still think that Hill and Bill killed Vince Foster, and I'd hate to be on their bandwagon, lol!
I don't know, Pat. It seems to me that phone conversations are more easily recorded. There was absolutely no good reason for Bill Clinton to go onto Loretta Lynch's plane that day. He truly knew better, and so did she. It doesn't seem to me that any conversation about grandchildren or golf could possibly be worth risking being seen and misunderstood, given that the report was due out and Hillary was about to be interviewed by the FBI. It's not as if that never crossed their minds. I honestly believe there was more to that conversation.
Nope, lol! not paranoid enough to believe that anyone's tapping the phone of an ex-president or the US Attorney General. IF they are, game's up anyways.

I just don't understand why Hillary had a private server and email, nor why Bill went off to talk to Loretta Lynch, and the insouciance goes on and on. I don't think they are terrible people, rather people who learned to manipulate the system to their benefit and who seem to have no clue as to how their behaviors would be interpreted. For instance, to secure super delegates before any other candidates even announced was arrogant, in my opinion. Why did Hillary and her supporters do that? Did they think that everyone would just fall into agreement?
So many families have suffered from dysfunction, but surely, we don't have to live the rest of our lives reliving the psychological wounds, or do we? I guess, for me, the bigger question is, where are the candidates who have solid principles, who are honest, who have the vision and energy to lead through these complex and yes, dangerous times, grappling with issues of climate, energy, terrorism, failed states, immigration, poverty, cults, the influence and dominance of greed, etc.? Where are the Eugene McCarthy's, the Howard Deans???

Apparently the FBI did clear Hillary about the e-mail problem. I wonder if we have a party structure problem as much as anything.
I think healing from dysfunction is partly dependent on the type of wound, partly on the resilience of the child, partly on the age. We know that sexual abuse is almost impossible of recovery for a child, which makes the assault worse. I know a family where the father was an alcoholic, with three kids--the eldest did fine, as did the baby. The second son was pretty much destroyed by it.
I'm gathering that the State Department email system is some onerous, else why would at least three SOSs have avoided it? In some ways it's hard to blame Republicans--they're authoritarians, and it's in their nature to hunt down and punish relentlessly. I expect the Clintons derive a good deal of pleasure in outwitting that mob, time after time.

I read an article in the latest issue of the New Yorker on how the political parties have manipulated Blacks and women, using them to accomplish their own ends, perpetrating racism and hierarchies.
I guess I would have been scrupulous about following the rules, knowing that "the vast right wing conspiracy" would do whatever it could to discredit me. The Bush Administration destroyed their emails; Petraeus and Powell had their own private emails, so it wasn't unprecedented to have a private server. It just seemed to me to be injudicious, opening oneself up to criticism.
It's interesting that the nominees are in their 70s. Martin O'Malley was the youngest of the Democratic candidates. Do you suppose we are destined to see what the leaders of our generation can do to deal with the problems that have become major in our lifetime?

the 'rumor' is that Hillary will not be charged but that isn't official, they haven't announced their decision yet. it is also rumored that they will announce before the dem convention and that does make sense.
Rice and Powell did not have their own servers but they did use their personal email accounts from time to time - BIG difference. Hillary had a private server to get around the FOIA - freedom of information act. she did not want us to find out what she was up to, ya know? it seems they did a lot of their foundation business on that server as well as well as SOS business. she also destroyed her SOS official calendars for certain dates because the personal one she used didn't match it - she had meetings with certain people that she didn't want made public but fortunately Huma did not lie when the FBI interrogated her. her original excuse for using a private server and personal email for SOS business was that she didn't want to have to carry more than one device - and then soon after she mentioned in an interview that she uses multiple devices all of the time.
there are a number of lawsuits against the DNC and Hillary re: election fraud and the UN has been petitioned to review the problems they had in certain states - once they have been petitioned they have to investigate, whether the US likes it or not. this is far from over but the longer they can stall the more horrible this will be if they charge Hillary after she is officially the nominee - and if you thought already she is, well not yet. she did not secure enough delegates to be so, that's why they are calling her the 'presumptive' nominee. if the stuff hits the fan prior to the convention she may not become the nominee and the dnc may try to bring in Biden or some other loyal person. this is going to be interesting.

The closest I have found is this (From WorldNetDaily, a conservative source), which says that having met with the FBI and been interviewed on Saturday, she would be cleared *unless* her interview indicates otherwise. But I see nothing official. What do you see?

I remember being disgusted with Hillary's explanation for the signing of the Defense of Marriage Act. She said that Bill signed it because they didn't want to see an amendment pass. Yet, it was extremely unlikely an amendment would have passed since it takes a 2/3 vote. I found her answer insulting, disingenuous. I think maybe that's a typical response from her, and it brings distrust.
Still, I worry that Trump could be elected because of the disaffection of Democrats. He's a horror story, reminds me of Hitler's rise to power based on anger, fear, polarization, resentment, bigotry, victimization, and disregard for the common good.

In the middle of my third time through the 2005 P&P. Best I can come up with is that the director/producers didn't like Jane Austen at all. Seems like Valley Girls Come to Rabelais might give the viewers some warning, anyways. Yes, some gorgeous scenery, and Keira's as cute as can be, in a 13 year old girl sort of way. But Pigs? PIGS??? Even pigs with giant balls? Since about the 60's we've pretty much been able to sort of count on the costuming of period drama being roughly accurate. . . . But evidently the director doesn't like the period.
On the plus side, I do like the parents better here than in most renditions. Charlotte was the most fetching spinster, evah.

Bill makes the excellent point that Bernie is going to win in Vermont anyway, and we are not a battle ground state. So he plans to write in Bernie's name (even if he endorses Hillary), and let Vermont say loudly that Bernie was the best choice, just as we voted for Dean anyway. I have the luxury of telling any Hillary supporter who fusses at me that Vermont is Bernie's and we're not going to make or break the election anyway, so they can just like it.

Of course, everyone is saying there will be no indictment because the laws that put her actions in questions were put in place to ensure no enemy got the information, and there is no enemy in this mix (so they say). I'm going to say what I'll probably regret, but Bill Clinton is plain irresponsible, and I don't think Hillary is very bright. When TV advertisements tout her children's health care law, that happened in the 90's, more than 20 years ago. What has she accomplished in all her years of public service, for instance, Congress, for instance, Secretary of State? Her statements are generalized, bland, and she just doesn't seem to have good judgment or a clear and astute perception of issues.
Yes, I'll vote for her, but without enthusiasm, more to prevent a fascist, Neo-Nazi takeover of government. But, what on earth was Bill Clinton thinking of as he joined Loretta Lynch on her plane? And Hillary, if you can only point to Children's Health Care as achievements, it's not enough.

I was thinking: Hillary, ambitious, driven, intent on achieving political prominence whether it's as Senator, Secretary of State, or President. She marries a charismatic fool who has all the emotional maturity of a preteen, who is irresponsible, and whom I believe she has acted as a control and stabilizing influence.
But, he undermines her at every situation, as a philanderer from the time he was governor, to affairs with Jennifer Flowers, Monica Lewinsky, and others,as President, to damaging her first campaign for president, to this latest irresponsible, stupid, and maybe malevolent effort.
It's almost Shakespearean. Did, does he really intend to cause the damage he does? We can't know someone's thoughts or intentions, but this is just awful. For whatever Hillary's character or personality foibles, no one deserves this kind of punishing. It really is tragic, and what to do about it? For all Hillary's faults, she has worked very hard her whole life; she has done some good; she is capable, and has served for many years. Now, I wonder. If she is exonerated, it is likely people will say it was a deal the Clintons made with the FBI. How bad can it get! Just some speculation on my part.

I admit to being totally at a loss about the reaction to two big wigs having a tete-a-tete in an airplane parked on the tarmac surrounded by reporters. I'm pretty sure that both Bill and Loretta have phones. If undue influence was being tried, why pick such an enormously public place?

Good point. Hysteria is certainly present, and I think maybe I'm prone to it as well. But why give those prone to it, a situation that feeds it? I appreciate your good sense. I just have never seen a presidential situation this extreme before with respect to language, distrust, accusations, polarization.

One of the things I do now is check google--if the main condemnation is by hot air or breitbart or the like, I ignore. During Howard's campaign, it was the Freepers and CounterPunch. These are peeps fueled by hate, and it spills into the culture at large, without actually swelling their ranks, or making them any more accurate.
The Clinton hate machine's been running for almost a quarter of a century now, and is no more accurate now than then. I don't like the Clintons, then or now, but I don't like them because of their politics, which are much to the right of mine. But *those* peeps still think that Hill and Bill killed Vince Foster, and I'd hate to be on their bandwagon, lol!

I don't know, Pat. It seems to me that phone conversations are more easily recorded. There was absolutely no good reason for Bill Clinton to go onto Loretta Lynch's plane that day. He truly knew better, and so did she. It doesn't seem to me that any conversation about grandchildren or golf could possibly be worth risking being seen and misunderstood, given that the report was due out and Hillary was about to be interviewed by the FBI. It's not as if that never crossed their minds. I honestly believe there was more to that conversation.
Nope, lol! not paranoid enough to believe that anyone's tapping the phone of an ex-president or the US Attorney General. IF they are, game's up anyways.

I just don't understand why Hillary had a private server and email, nor why Bill went off to talk to Loretta Lynch, and the insouciance goes on and on. I don't think they are terrible people, rather people who learned to manipulate the system to their benefit and who seem to have no clue as to how their behaviors would be interpreted. For instance, to secure super delegates before any other candidates even announced was arrogant, in my opinion. Why did Hillary and her supporters do that? Did they think that everyone would just fall into agreement?
So many families have suffered from dysfunction, but surely, we don't have to live the rest of our lives reliving the psychological wounds, or do we? I guess, for me, the bigger question is, where are the candidates who have solid principles, who are honest, who have the vision and energy to lead through these complex and yes, dangerous times, grappling with issues of climate, energy, terrorism, failed states, immigration, poverty, cults, the influence and dominance of greed, etc.? Where are the Eugene McCarthy's, the Howard Deans???

I think healing from dysfunction is partly dependent on the type of wound, partly on the resilience of the child, partly on the age. We know that sexual abuse is almost impossible of recovery for a child, which makes the assault worse. I know a family where the father was an alcoholic, with three kids--the eldest did fine, as did the baby. The second son was pretty much destroyed by it.
I'm gathering that the State Department email system is some onerous, else why would at least three SOSs have avoided it? In some ways it's hard to blame Republicans--they're authoritarians, and it's in their nature to hunt down and punish relentlessly. I expect the Clintons derive a good deal of pleasure in outwitting that mob, time after time.
Whitewater cost $70 million; Lewinsky cost $6.2 million; Benghazi cost $7 million. . . . Well, so much for fiscal conservatism, lol!

I read an article in the latest issue of the New Yorker on how the political parties have manipulated Blacks and women, using them to accomplish their own ends, perpetrating racism and hierarchies.
I guess I would have been scrupulous about following the rules, knowing that "the vast right wing conspiracy" would do whatever it could to discredit me. The Bush Administration destroyed their emails; Petraeus and Powell had their own private emails, so it wasn't unprecedented to have a private server. It just seemed to me to be injudicious, opening oneself up to criticism.
It's interesting that the nominees are in their 70s. Martin O'Malley was the youngest of the Democratic candidates. Do you suppose we are destined to see what the leaders of our generation can do to deal with the problems that have become major in our lifetime?

hi all, hope you had a happy weekend. the weather here has been perfect! getting hotter and more humid this week so I won't be out and about too much.
I would like to clear a few things up...
the 'rumor' is that Hillary will not be charged but that isn't official, they haven't announced their decision yet. it is also rumored that they will announce before the dem convention and that does make sense.
Rice and Powell did not have their own servers but they did use their personal email accounts from time to time - BIG difference. Hillary had a private server to get around the FOIA - freedom of information act. she did not want us to find out what she was up to, ya know? it seems they did a lot of their foundation business on that server as well as well as SOS business. she also destroyed her SOS official calendars for certain dates because the personal one she used didn't match it - she had meetings with certain people that she didn't want made public but fortunately Huma did not lie when the FBI interrogated her. her original excuse for using a private server and personal email for SOS business was that she didn't want to have to carry more than one device - and then soon after she mentioned in an interview that she uses multiple devices all of the time.
there are a number of lawsuits against the DNC and Hillary re: election fraud and the UN has been petitioned to review the problems they had in certain states - once they have been petitioned they have to investigate, whether the US likes it or not. this is far from over but the longer they can stall the more horrible this will be if they charge Hillary after she is officially the nominee - and if you thought already she is, well not yet. she did not secure enough delegates to be so, that's why they are calling her the 'presumptive' nominee. if the stuff hits the fan prior to the convention she may not become the nominee and the dnc may try to bring in Biden or some other loyal person. this is going to be interesting.

How stupid can the DNC be?! I guess we'll see.

The closest I have found is this (From WorldNetDaily, a conservative source), which says that having met with the FBI and been interviewed on Saturday, she would be cleared *unless* her interview indicates otherwise. But I see nothing official. What do you see?

It's good to hear from you, Jo, and thank you for the clarifications. This is indeed a problematical presidential election. I remember being disgusted with Hillary's explanation for the signing of the Defense of Marriage Act. She said that Bill signed it because they didn't want to see an amendment pass. Yet, it was extremely unlikely an amendment would have passed since it takes a 2/3 vote. I found her answer insulting, disingenuous. I think maybe that's a typical response from her, and it brings distrust.
Still, I worry that Trump could be elected because of the disaffection of Democrats. He's a horror story, reminds me of Hitler's rise to power based on anger, fear, polarization, resentment, bigotry, victimization, and disregard for the common good.
There's no doubt in my mind that our representative democracy is in a state of disintegration, and what to do about it?

So Hillary was sloppy and careless in her email handlings. So how will she handle being Prez? ACK Unfortunately, we seem to be stuck with her. The FBI will not prosecute and stated that any good prosecutor would not pursue the case. :o(.
We'll have to wait to see what goes on with the convention. But the good news is that Berniecrats are winning their primaries all over the place. It may take a while, but I think this Revolution has legs.

Meanwhile, although there's no evidence that *Hill's* email was hacked, evidently, both the State Department's email, and the CIA's email were. Also, the DNC's. Oh, fie!! Both NPR and VPR have reported this hour that Bernie will be endorsing Hillary, apparently next week in NH while Hillary is in NH. =HEAVY SIGH= (NPR said NH, VPR just said it was going to happen.)
This means I will need to leave the Presidential choices blank come November. I had really wanted to vote for Bernie.
I imagine that Bernie is thinking less about the Presidential race and trustworthiness, and more about how to give the new (and old) Bernie-friendly Congressional candidates the best legup possible, going into their first (next) term in House and Senate. Even so.
In the middle of my third time through the 2005 P&P. Best I can come up with is that the director/producers didn't like Jane Austen at all. Seems like Valley Girls Come to Rabelais might give the viewers some warning, anyways. Yes, some gorgeous scenery, and Keira's as cute as can be, in a 13 year old girl sort of way. But Pigs? PIGS??? Even pigs with giant balls? Since about the 60's we've pretty much been able to sort of count on the costuming of period drama being roughly accurate. . . . But evidently the director doesn't like the period.
On the plus side, I do like the parents better here than in most renditions. Charlotte was the most fetching spinster, evah.

Bill makes the excellent point that Bernie is going to win in Vermont anyway, and we are not a battle ground state. So he plans to write in Bernie's name (even if he endorses Hillary), and let Vermont say loudly that Bernie was the best choice, just as we voted for Dean anyway. I have the luxury of telling any Hillary supporter who fusses at me that Vermont is Bernie's and we're not going to make or break the election anyway, so they can just like it.
