When you were describing the cable mess in the basement, it made me think of my mothers phone mess in the attic, lol! While I was there, the phone's were all frizting, so I called the phone co. Unfortunately for them, she *had* paid the insurance. . . What the guy found in the attic was: a lake -- the roof had leaked for years, so the handy brothers had spread a huge sheet of heavy plastic (about 20 x 60, and the weight of the water had depressed the insulation, and created a large lake with phone and electric cables running through it. Also, the original phone box in the garage circa 1959, had simply corroded. . . . They had to replace everything from the poles to the jacks, in a house made wholly of half cinderblock with poured concrete flooring. She got her insurance back with knobs on, lol!
MY wiring for the phone on the other hand consists of one foot from the box straight through the wall to the single jack.
Goodness, the press is all over this. Facebook is awash in political cartoons, it's like a carnival!! R-Ayn is appealing the the Tea Party, which is ecstatic. And turning off the Indies, who have *some* pride/intellect. . . .
My fav of the hour: the front end of a Rolls Royce, with Romney and Ryan above and below the RR. . . .
Isn't Galt a character in Ayn Rand's novels. Rand and many other tea partiers adore her and look to her writings for guidance. Any sane, objective view is that she and her novels are filled with no concern but for the self. Have never read her--heaven help me had a hairdresser who took her up for a time. Couldn't stand the thought of wasting my time on her hateful view of the world.
I never read her either - heard enugh from some I know and the godawful many reviews that I never had the interest.

But I've been turning a deaf ear to all the rhetoric. I'm hopeful that Romney can't possibly win. And adding Ryan just makes that all the more certain. At least, I know that's true here in Vermont.
Our eldest tested today for 5th degree black belt and passed fine. Here is a link to the photos, if anyone's interested. Son is an international referee and is one of the top 20 referees in the country. His focus is on keeping the sport fair and safe.
Another Black Belt story for Listener. When Daughter Marla, husband and three teen-age daughters lived in Ann Arbor, MI--Marla and all her daughters took Karate lessons--and earned their Black Belts.
Not sure about the girls, but Marla can still get herself into some fascinating--to me-- yoga positions.
The general consensus is shaping up to be that the Romney pick rather than being bold is a panic response. Feels about right to me. The need to quieten the Baggers, at the cost of losing the Indies they need. The Baggers were getting ready to perform a riot at the convention to dump him. And the convention is earlier than the election. So I'm guessing they think/hope/pray they'll be able to fix the rest between the convention and the election. I'm thinking not, though.
What IS really astonishing to me is that the *same* person could push RomneyCare and Gun Control, then turn around and espouse the opposite without expecting *someone* to notice. . . .

I hadn't thought about the "panic pick" approach--but sound about right with President Obama's continually edging upward. And..if this is a panic pick..who would want a pres who operated in that mode???
When my dad was in college in the thirties, he and some buds ran for student gubbmint positions, as "Barbs" -- anti-Frat/Greeks. They won. And the fraternities immediately offered to pledge them. One of them did. And the next year, daddy won President. Their objection was University giving money to the Greeks, and not to the studentbody as a whole for activities.
The culture of pre-paid privilege is one he fought his whole life. And Mitt is the *perfect* example of too much/life-long privilege. . . . I think he's likely genuinely puzzled why he's having such a hard time at this. I think life has always been fun for him, without his having to do much of anything in return. He's not much of a thinker to begin with. (All dogs *like* to ride on top of cars for a thousand miles or so. . . .) He's done some pretty awful stuff and never even been rebuked (assaulting a classmate and chopping off his hair while the victim screamed and begged. . . . ). He no doubt expected this to be a breeze -- I wish I believed that this would cause him to think a bit. But I don't think it will. . . F. Scott chronicled it pretty well: The rich are not like us.

This, too, is crazy (and it’s disturbing that Mr Romney appears to share this delusional view about what ails our economy). There’s no mystery about the reasons the economic recovery has been so weak. Housing is still depressed in the aftermath of a huge bubble, and consumer demand is being held back by the high levels of household debt that are the legacy of that bubble. Business investment has actually held up fairly well given this weakness in demand. Why should businesses invest more when they don’t have enough customers to make full use of the capacity they already have?
But never mind. Because the rich are different from you and me, many of them are incredibly self-centred. They don’t even see how funny it is — how ridiculous they look — when they attribute the weakness of a $15 trillion economy to their own hurt feelings. After all, who’s going to tell them? They’re safely ensconced in a bubble of deference and flattery. Unless, that is, they run for public office.

Brenda says High Point, NC is highly Republican. It was a major furniture manufacturing town until manufacturing moved to China, etc. It is still the home of the twice a year Furniture Market for designers, manufacturers etc. Flights, hotels, and restaurants in HP and GSO are booked solid for a week or so. I guess Romney thinks he has friends in the industry. Besides he can't come to GSO -the Obamas seem to be in the area often!
I did a craft show in High Point, once upon a time: excellent convention facilities, lol! It was my first big adventure into schedule C bookkeeping, too.

After returning my library treasures yesterday Brenda and I headed out High Point road to Jerusalem Market to pick up some fresh Middle Eastern foods and then a short tour in SW Guilford County including a county park that Brenda didn't hadn't been to.
Apparently we weren't too far from the--festivities.!
We've been busy here. Yesterday was my friend's Celebration of Life at the Mountain Research Station near Nederland where we lived for over 30 years.
There must have been a hundred people there. Joyce lived at the Mountain Research Station when her family was young and she was studying for her Ph.D. in Botany.
What was amazing was the number of friends and all the connections among us. I saw people I hadn't seen in 25 years, teachers I taught with at Nederland and Boulder High Schools, people in Nederland, Stephen Jones, a wonderful writer whose book on the prairie I had a quotation framed, people from NCAR, Rocky Mountain National Park Nature Conservancy, the University of Colorado, our old writers' group. As David remarked, circles upon circles of friendship.
We all laughed at what a trekker she was, leaving us in the dust so often. Once, cross country skiing with her and another friend up at the station, I had fallen, it seemed like 68 times. I lay on the ground and said, OK, I'm done. I'm not getting up again. Call the Rocky Mountain Rescue. We laughed. When she helped me up, I said, now you have to help me all my life. There's that old Native American Saying, once you help someone, you have to help them their whole lives.
I have so many wonderful memories. She was an extraordinary person,a friend to so many. She asked friends for help when she needed to. She died sharing her thoughts and feelings in the process.
Another perception, everyone I talked to affirmed how much they love being here, loving Colorado. So many of us saw it and said, this is where we want to live. And for me, it is as close to heaven as I can imagine.
It was a beautiful, moving, warm, loving get-together in a place that Joyce loved.
So, more editing to do, and I'm still sad, thoughtful, not grieving, just recognizing how precious every day is.

He's thinks the choice is crazy, and the *timing* is crazy. I just think that Mitt is so self-absorbed that it amounts to crazy. . . . I think that the idear of being President is actually not that much different to him than getting and wearing State Troopers' uniforms when he was younger: a by-product of privilege and play. I don't think he had a clue that it could cost this much in personal esteem. . . .
When I was 17 I met, and fell in love with, an "older" (24) guy, who was consummately political. He knew, and I knew, even at our ages, that not one thing in our lives would ever be unexamined. I've expected my whole life to see him running for President, lol! He hasn't, but he has stayed political. Romney seems actually stunned at what he's expected to come clean about. And what he's being held responsible for. I *almost* pity him. He's in no way equipped to run, much less to serve.
Pat, I think these ceremonies and celebrations are important as they do, as you and David noted, affirm our connections with each other. I think they also offer some salve for the loss. And there's no getting over that.
When my mom died, my sister said, you wouldn't be so unhappy if you believed you'd be seeing her again. I had to laugh: I DO believe that. Just not on her or my sister's terms. I was unhappy because I MISS being able to talk to her NOW.

I sometimes sit in the morning, looking out at the mountain, imagining my mother here with me, and we are just talking. Each generation has known such different circumstances, and in my mother's generation, so many women weren't allowed to be and to do what they could have, that they had the talent, will, and energy to do. What a cheat for them and for society.
But, Title IX has made such a difference. The women in the U.S. took the majority of the medals. Hillary Clinton, I'm sure, will go down in history as an extraordinary woman. And just between us, the women on the blogs were the most reasonable, most scrupulous, and most fair of all the bloggers, excepting some, of course. : ) And it was Birch Bayh and Mink, both Democrats who sponsored Title IX, which Jesse Helms fought as they say, tooth and nail.
Ah, the danger of too many books--is that sometimes one forgets what is really there. Gathering up reading material for nights and naps at The Rock and looking through my NC collection I find the biography of Doc Watson I have been hankering after! Tracked down the gifter--Dana the Queen of Amazon Ordering. On the way to my suitcase, took a peak and have ended up reading a good third--fascinating. Will take it along finished or unfinished!!!
Teabaggers on a local blog are more arrogant, unreasonable, etc., etc., than ever after the Ryan pick.
