Late good Morning all--just a normal night owl here. Roberta Flack was in town last evening at our elegantly restored 1920's Carolina Theatre for a fund raiser. I hope They hauled in a whole bucket full of bucks. My youngest daughter who has lived here for 7 years worked there last night and I will get the scoop, the skinny or whatever the current word is when I see her. Saturday evening we have tickets for a Mike Cross concert--another NC musician--seems to be in the mode of beloved Doc Watson. But nobody beats Doc!
Trip to store: clear blue skies, small wind. The first of the phlox! Last of the red bud, and the center of the dogwoods dancing in the deep shade. The fragile fine chokecherry in blossom. Elder in abundance, and the honeysuckle just out. A flock of butterfly bright Mennonite girls of bicycles, organza bonnet strings flying! Sweet spring, and spring storm on the way, soon. From the south which is always our biggest storms' path. Evidence of green and growing everywhere. Met a nice neighbor on his antique Ford mowing our road. It's called a dirt road, but really isn't: it's a grass road. We chatted a bit -- he's the one with the ablation. About how, 100 years ago, what we have would have killed us. . . .
Admire them -- They are from no place near to me (we tend to have more Church of the Brethren) and they were as fresh and fine as the spring afternoon. And laughing.
Or, maybe Jo, just a little break from setting us up here--and nurturing us the first few days. I do love it and hope we can continue. If we can help--in any way let us know. I would be glad to pay a monthly maintenance fee. I can FINALLY talk to all these Deaniacs! Many Thanks.

it's sad that 'so far' none of the men left over there on the old blog have shown an interest in joining us - but then I think some of them have been intimidated by the ladies because we don't hesitate to speak our minds. some men don't seem to like that. and then there are those who don't 'trust' me as a moderator, lol! Lord, Shirlee, I love Wendell Berry. Funny, though you'd think I'd have discovered him as an English major: he's a *fine* poet. But I didn't. I discovered him as a soon-to-be-homesteader.
Absolutely *weirdest* thing happened tonight. Let me preface this by saying, I haven't had any trubble with eggs for decades. Since I was in China. And before that, since childhood, when you always broke eggs into a separate bowl, so they could be checked before adding to anything else.
Tonight: not ONE, but TWO egg incidents. First was from my egg lady -- free range organic. The shell was extremely hard to break. Which is unusual -- she has problems getting her chickies to eat enough calcium. When it broke, first egg into the pan, luckily, it was just black mush. I emptied the pan into the sink, and it washed easily down the drain. No smell. So started over with a clean pan. The very next egg was from my country store, a double yolker. One of the two yolks was just *strange* -- it was like it had a white coat on. Dumped that into my waste collector in the sink, the yolk broke, and came out of its white coat, but the inside is just solid. Again. No smell.
Washed the pan, and started over. The next two were fine. But I'm spooked.
And I did think that if anybody loved Wendell Berry it might be you. He was suggested to me by a young lady who said "I think you would love Wendell Berry." I hi'ed off to the nearest used book store. They had a copy of "The Gift of Good Land." They also told me that people who buy W.B. usually keep the books. This was the early '80's. And it was an eye opening title for me--I had no idea we were doing so much damage to our land. Then I found "A Place on Earth" and on and on. Discovered his poetry later. His work has made a huge difference in the way I view life. And now because Jo created this space --lo, there you are, another W.B. lover!

secondly, so weird, I had an egg incident myself today! opened a new 6 pak of organinc eggs that my niece had picked up for me, first egg I grab breaks in the package - you know, stuck to the bottom like they do. next egg, same thing and I realize that the shells of every egg is paper thin and yes, they smell. so I tossed the whole package and didn't have eggs for breakfast.
puddle do you use the email addy that I have for your google account? btw, when composing there is the choice to switch to their old format, so although they 'make' you have both at least you can choose which to work with - I think. I haven't tried it!

I think the acrimony between some of us is just too deep, has gone on for too long. the folks who attack me and my lady friends there are blind to what we say and keep up their lies (denial) about our participation there, our pov. it would be nice to get back to discussing things civilly, no matter our opinion. it will be nice to get away from 'mean'. and I include myself in that. I tired of sea's BS and crazy chit long ago and although I tried (as did every one of us, Pat, puddle, Denise, cC and many others) to ignore her, the sheer magnitude of what she tried to turn that blog of Howard's into was just too much to ignore.

I’m 75 years old. I’ve about completed my responsibilities to my family. I’ll lose very little in going to jail in opposition to your program – and I’ll have to do it. Because I will be, in every way that I can conceive of, a non-cooperator."[23]
In October 2009 Berry combined with "the Berea-based Kentucky Environmental Foundation (KEF), along with several other non-profit organizations and rural electric co-op members" to petition against and protest the construction of a coal-burning power plant in Clark County, Kentucky.[24] On February 28, 2011, the Kentucky Public Service Commission approved the cancellation of this power plant.[25]
On September 28, 2010 Berry participated in a rally in Louisville during an EPA hearing on how to manage coal ash. Berry said, "The EPA knows that coal ash is poison. We ask it only to believe in its own findings on this issue, and do its duty."[26]
Berry, with 14 other protesters, spent the weekend of February 12, 2011 locked in the Kentucky governor’s office demanding an end to mountaintop removal coal mining. He was part of the environmental group Kentuckians for the Commonwealth that began their sit-in on Friday and left at midday Monday to join about 1,000 others in a mass outdoor rally.[27][28]
In 2011, The Berry Center was established at New Castle, KY, "for the purpose of bringing focus, knowledge and cohesiveness to the work of changing our ruinous industrial agriculture system into a system and culture that uses nature as the standard, accepts no permanent damage to the ecosphere, and takes into consideration human health in local communities."[29]
Egg update. When I was tossing the last egg, noticed a pencil X on the bottom of the double yolker. Which was comforting: it means the egg candler *saw* something wrong. What went wrong was the egg didn't get discarded. But all I have to do is make sure no eggs have X's on em. As for the free range eggs: revert to the Chinese method: put every dozen in a bowel of water: those that float get tossed. Mea culpa: I'd taken the bad egg out of a pan of water (getting ready to boil a dozen for salads), and didn't check before trying it in the frying pan.
Nancy won't feed her chickies *egg* shell (something about cannibalism, lol! But uses oyster shell. Which they'd just leave. Now she's premixing with the feed, so they can't really avoid it, and the shells are better. I wonder what wild birds eat to keep their shells from breaking?
Today Earth Day. We watched Buffalo Bill Cody, of 80 million bison, 1500 were left after the "taming of the West" and I think of Joseph Campbell's "At one ment" and wonder about our species. Atonement might mean we develop a whole new ethos of how we live. We may have to.

What a wonderful treat this morning--finding Wendell Berry's work and Puddle's poem for him on dfa. I was so elated last night, Puddle, when you said you loved W.B. too--and now we find Jo does also! Thank you.
Not to take up all our space with w.b.--but yes-he is VERY active. Has helped his daughter and husband establish a winery on another family farm--and as needed he takes his sheep over there to crop under the vines--and fertilize the ground at the same time.
It is lovely wine and a wonderful place to visit--try www.smithberrywinery.com- They also ship. In the sale shop they have a small supply of W.B.' latest writings--some of the nicest are the Sabbaths--small chapbooks.
We were supposed to travel out of state to visit my husband's brother, as he is ill with a virulent resurgence of pancreatic cancer. But, since he had to be taken back to the hospital for rehydration, he's not up to a visit tomorrow. We're regrouping for Monday.
So, if the rain holds off, we'll go to the National Gardening Association site in South Burlington, VT and help our son's non-profit "The Root Center" www.therootcenter.org begin to plant this year's huge organic garden...all of which will go to the local food banks! There are people joining together tomorrow from 18 different countries to help!
The four young co-founders do this work on their own time. Thursday evening they were awarded the Herb Blumenthal Award for Community Activism. Rock on, Root Center!

another night that I dozed off early. I'm up early but feel rested and still no cramps in my feet and legs last night- yay again!
